What a gorgous place Baños is - so pretty here and lots of outdoor activites to get stuck into. Baños gets it name as its next to Volcan Tungurahua (5016m elevation) which results in some lovely hot springs around. The volano is pretty active still, with a significant eruption in Feb 08, however nothing major to report when we were here.
We stayed in a wooden cabin type place, cozy with an open fireplace in our room. Managing to avoid a lot of serious bugs so far except for a MASSIVE locust in our room which Magnus bravely defeated.
Baños (elevation 1800m) is surrounded by lushious green peaks and a fab place to spend a few days. We did a bit of hiking in the area and also some horseriding too which took us up to some of the old lava rivers, was nice with just the two of us and a guide. (Although both were a bit sore as a result of the horseriding.....)
Also decided to hire a quad-bike/beach buggy and head off in search of waterfalls. Unfortuantely without the aid of either a decent map or a guide we both ended up heading up one
of the (wrong) mountains on a very steep narrow road. It didnt help that we didnt appear to have reverse gear on this bike - oops. Well have a bit of manual manourvering by Magnus we both set back on the right path to view some of the beautiful waterfalls.
The very special treat every evening were the dirt cheap hotsprings set next to a very pretty waterfall where you can lay in the hot (yes seriously hot - we reckon about 45 deg followed by icy cold showers directly from the waterfall). We just lazed in the waters watching the sunset follwed by gazing up up at the stars in the sky and the lit up waterfall at night.
