Andrew Stone Husmann After determining that safe passage was reasonably attainable, I headed into the primarily guerrilla controlled southeast of Colombia to see the giant statues of San Augustin. The statues, reminiscent of Easter Island, range in size from a few feet to over 25, and are a mystery, as no one knows who built them, or why. British archaelogists who discovered them only 90 years ago determined that the indigenous people there are not descended from those who built them. They also took about 700 of them back to England which the Colombians are still complaining about.
I also saw one of the most stunning churches I have ever seen, along the Colombian/Ecuadorian border. The church of the Virgen was actually built relatively recently (1920s), in response to the overwhelming number of reports of miracles occuring in the location.
