I arrived in Armenia on Sunday, one of the three main towns in Colombia's coffee region and was immediately enveloped in the famous Colombian hospitality. I had arranged a trip to the region through an agency, so basically I didn't have to think too much in the coming days....except in Spanish. I was too cheap to spring for an English speaking guide and I thought it would be better for my Spanish practice. Well that's my story anyhow. I was picked up by Yicel, the local agent here who had organised my time in the region. She whisked me off to have lunch with her parents to celebrate Mother's Day. Like most Colombians I have met they were fascinated that I was travelling alone. Colombians usually travel with their families, which was proven true when I ... read more

I was dead tired from lack of sleep on the bus ride into the eje cafetero (towards Armenia). When I woke to see a mirador near the entrance of the city I was speechless and breathless at the same time. I could not believe the beauty before my eyes, and it was just a tiny peak through the sun-filled windows. I could see high, jagged rolling clustered of lush, green, mountain, hailing before the bright blue sky, covered with... well green, exuberant shades of life. SR. Alvaro (a friend of a friend sent to take care of me) picked me from the bus terminal and dropped me at the ever so cordial and accommodating SRA Martha’s hotel. It was beautiful, clean, and had HOT water! -but situated in the rather ugly town of Montefeo, I mean ... read more

We spent 3 days in Salento, a beautiful little town in the middle of the coffee region. It looked like the sterotypical Colombian town, complete with Juan Valdez look-a-likes wearing ponchos and cowboy hats riding horses down the streets. Unfortunately with Colombian stereotypes comes violence, and we saw our first example in this tiny, quiet town (not directed toward us). Our first night in town we went to the town square for a few drinks at the only place that was open with a group of people from the hostel. There was a drunk man sitting on the steps in front of the bar, and a man inside the bar starting whipping him in the face with a horse whip! The military police came and hauled off the guy who had been whipped. It was really ... read more

In Colombia during Christmas, almost anywhere you go you will see Christmas lights... but Im not just talking about plain old Christmas lights you see on Christmas trees... Im talking huge displays of lights in the shape of flowers, animals, people, cars etc. called alumbrados. I had heard of these lights my whole life, so when I went to Colombia and saw just how amazing they were I couldn't believe it! The ones I saw in Cali and in Armenia are located in huge parks. I dont know where they store these after Christmas is over because I imagine they'd need a warehouse to store them, they're so big! I really enjoyed Christmas in Colombia. Los alumbrados are something unique and special in Colombia. You have families hosting novenas, which are a series of traditional prayers ... read more

When I first met my boyfriend (now husband) in 2005 I knew one day he'd take me to Colombia to meet his family. I am also Colombian by blood, but I was born in the US and had never visited before. So when he invited me to go spend a month there during Christmas vacation, I enthusiastically said "of course!!" On December 15th 2008 I embarked on my first real trip overseas, and to a brand new continent: South America. We landed first in Cali Colombia, stayed a few days with Victor’s aunt, and then took a 3 hour bus ride to Armenia Colombia where the majority of Victor's family lives. I felt safe the whole time I was in Colombia, and it probably helped that I blended in well. Either way, Colombia has come a ... read more

In Colombia, if you walk into a souvenir store you will deffinitly see this for sale: a hand made minature version of a bus that is extremely colorfull usually with reds, yellows, and blues (like the Colombian flag) and on top of it features little tiny fruit baskets, chickens, and may or may not have a little person riding on the back. This is called a "Chiva". Chiva also means goat in spanish, but in this case we are talking about the Colombian party bus. Back in the day the chiva was used for local transportation and people used a ladder to climb up the bus and store their belongings for the ride. Today there are more modern city buses for transportation, so the Chiva is used less but can be rented for partys! You can ... read more

We left Medellin on Saturday, after partying all night long.We had a surprise party for Rob, our lovely British friend and went to Candela Res to celebrate him turning 27. So I got only 3 hours of sleep, woke up at 6.30am, packed only essential stuff for the trip, had to go teach for 4 hours (and btw, did a BRILLINAT job!)and rushed to the South Terminal to buy the tickets which I stupidly postponed purchasing til the last minute. I panicked as the girls were running late and started calling them to make sure they make it on time. We were all on board at 3pm :Caro (aka my Colombian twin), KOK, AIESEC trainee from China and I. After a 6-hour journey we finally got to Armania-Quindio and the minute we got off, there was ... read more
