Hello everybody,
We made a one day stop at this beautiful city. It has many facets including an 11 kilometre wall, historic fortress, beautiful sandy beach running along the city sidewalks, and modern office towers. The city goes back to the 1500's. In 1984 it was declared an historic city. Colombia has the third fastest growing economy in South America. Centuries ago, Cartagena was the third largest slave port in the Americas. The old city is surrounded by a wall. It is made of coral stone and took 150 years to complete. Labour was supplied by African slaves. It was needed to protect Cartagena from pirate attacks.

Enjoy the pictures,

Bye for now,

Donna

During inquisition, people were expected to have roof like this one--to keep witches from landing. Tiny women were most likely to be accused of being witches--light enough to fly.

Back in the day, status was determined by number of storeys and number of balconies.

Thanks
I consider myself lucky to be on your list! Just taking a break from digging out of drifting snow higher than my snow blower.

hello from Arizona!
Good Morning Donna. Betty and I felt so blessed to meet you during our cruise on the Norweigen Star through the Panama Canal. This blog caught my eye because that was the day we opted to venture only to the travel center close to the ship. The center is lush with mature vegetation, peppered with such colorful birds including Toucans, and has monkeys making homes in the trees. With the Flamingos, trees and ocean as a backdrop it made for one of our favorite photo spots. Thank you for filling in some of the blanks created by my curiosity of the city. Definitely a "wow" that the wall took 150 years to create. Thank you Donna!
