“If there is a heaven on Earth, this is it”, those were actually the words came out of my mouth when I stood in front of Torres del Paine! I was awed! Speechless! Three jagged edges crowned the snow covered mountain peaks and silently displayed their brilliant beauty under a blue canopy of sky. Waterfalls flowing from the mountain snow emptied into a small river. The light emerald colour water of the river is flowing like a dancing little girl. Not a soul was near by except us. The Nature has given it’s all and the beauty of the Nature is silently observed by Mother Nature herself! I am from Alberta, and I grew up with the beauty of the Rockies in my later part of life. Indeed, Rockies has opened up to me in hundred ... read more

Has it ever happened to you that sometime you visit a small town and you fall in love with the place? You start thinking - “I wish I could live here”. I don’t know about others, but this has happened to me a number of times. Once I was visiting Sapa in extreme North Vietnam and I loved the place. I started looking into rental property in Sapa. And I just stayed there for 2 nights only! I know what you are thinking – “what a crazy dude you are”. Maybe, I am. The same thing happened to me when Ryan and I flew to Punta Arenas. We only stayed there 3 nights and the place felt like home to me – coffee shop in patio, convenience stores in downtown, bank line ups, travel stores, small ... read more

As our bus made its way down the highway after the trip to Osorno volcano, our tour guide Jenny stood up with mike in her hand. “We are going to take a boat ride in Lake Todos los Santos”. Yup, that would be our next destination. Los Lagos region where Puerto Varas is located, is famous for its beauty of lakes. Lakes, rapids, waterfalls are scattered throughout the region and water sports like river rafting are popular in the region. Lake Todos is about 76 km east of Puerto Varas. Well, it’s just one day here for us, so more we can cover in a day is a bonus for us. Yes, we had to buy a separate ticket for the boat ride as it was not included in the tour cost. But I tell you, ... read more

Our flight to Puerto Montt from Santiago was scheduled to depart at 5:37 am. That’s the first flight of the day from Latam Airlines to Puerto Montt. That’s damn early! And now-a-days one needs to arrive to the airport even 2 hours earlier even for a domestic flight. From our Best Western it takes at least half hour to reach the airport in the wee hours. So, we had to wake up at least 1 hour to get ready, allowing 30 minutes each for Ryan and me to share the facilities. We just returned from a day trip of Valpariso last night. And we sure were tired, but we didn’t have a choice! Did we sleep at all? Well, you do the math! Hotel reserved a cab for us who came on time. We dumped our ... read more

We booked all our tours in Chile in advance except a trip to Valpariso. What I found after studying internet, Valpariso is very close to Santiago and a day tour can be easily arranged from hotels when we were there. After we checked in at Best Western, I asked the front desk if they can arrange a day trip to Valpariso for the next day. The hotel was a decent one, conveniently located close to the underground metro station and next to a busy thoroughfare. People at front desk were friendly and helpful. “Not a problem”, the gentleman at the front desk confirmed and he arranged a pick up from the hotel on the following day. We were advised to pay to the tour guy directly. Valpariso is a port city around 116 km from Santiago. ... read more

Wow! I can’t believe that it’s been almost four years since I posted my last blog to share with my beloved Travelblog friends! “What happened to you, Tab”? Yes, what happened to me? Well, first I had an accident in Africa in 2018 and I was forced to cut down my trip. I flew back to Canada for an imminent surgery on my leg. Then the downtime ended when I planned to travel back to Africa again in 2020 to cover Rwanda genocide! Bang! The pandemic hit the world and destroyed our world order. Like many of you, I was restless but powerless to change the world. So, what did I do? Well, I continued to write my experience of traveling around the world and publish them as books. I got inspiration from my aunt, an ... read more

(Day 303 on the road)Visiting San Pedro de Atacama was special: It was the first place on this trip that I had been to before. Back in my student days, when I was doing an internship with a major airline, I was able to negotiate two free worldwide flights as part of my compensation package (the pay itself was pretty rubbish, if I remember correctly). I took one of those flights to Santiago de Chile and visited the Atacama Desert on that trip. Pretty much the only thing I remember about that visit in 2002 - some 21 years ago - was that it was bloody cold. And I can say that with certainty: That part hasn't changed much (a lot of other things have). I stayed in a guesthouse for three nights, and after freezing ... read more

Week 2 -Whale search When I last wrote we were in Quellon and it had proved difficult to find decent accommodation close enough to the ferry. I had eventually found a hospedaje run by a lady called Sonia, only downside was a shared bathroom but she assured me it was very clean. So I had booked it and it was 50 metres from the bus station. We went to leave our bags and the incoming ferry had arrived at 2am and there were people still asleep in our room. We opted for a different one and went in search of somewhere to repair my bag. My brand new 260€ Osprey travel bag had lost a zip between Santiago and Ancud, not the quality you expect and I had 3 more flights. The place was closed but ... read more

Week 1 Chiloe Island Here we are again, on our travels, and for those of you new to my blog it will be a combination of things we have done and sometimes reflections on a place or people. We are in Chile till 3rd March and then fly to Buenos Aires where Chris will join his old school friend for an Antarctic cruise and then we will meet up in Montevideo for 8-9 days. We started our trio from home and we were glad to get a lift from the village into Mula from our friend Mel. We got the bus to Murcia city then a taxi to the train station. Our first trip on an AVE, the high-speed train, was uneventful. It could have been different when a group of young men arrived with one ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago February 19th 2023

Being February, summer has arrived in South America. It is hot, dry and the wildfires are burning rampantly in the southern part of Chile. A haze of smoke fills the air and as we fly in from Rapa Nui. The views are masked… few mountain tops can be seen. Sad because this normally would quite scenic. But, it’s summer…. We spent a couple of days in Santiago before and after our trip to Rapa Nui and a couple of days in Valparaíso before our visit to the desert. Both cities are worth a visit, but each can easily be explored in two days. Santiago is the grand jumping off point in this part of the world. The airport is modern and flights from all places land here. Almost all destinations in Chile reached by air depart ... read more
