Howdy all, how are we?! Well, I just spent a very entertaining weekend in Valparaiso. It was good fun to be back in hostel again. Eventually. You see, Greg and I had not booked anywhere to stay for various reasons. But we were travelling down with 2 girls from school who had booked a place, so we thought we´d go where they were going and we might be OK, or if not they could point us in the right direction. Well, we arrived at the hostel, and surprise surprise they were fully booked. They phoned around some other places but they were all full too. So they pointed us in the general direction of 'a few´ hostels. Eventually we found one, but it was booked up too. So after a couple hours walkings the very hilly ... read more

English For the second time we crossed the border Argentina-Chile. This time the experience was much more positive, we did not had the same sad feeling of touristic exploitation that we tasted in Torres del Paine. Coming from Argentina we had to switch our brain to the chilean accent with 'ja, ja' again... Ok, we were quite trained this time, but we have to say that even if the language is the same, coming from one country to another in South America one has really to make an effort to grasp the differences in the accent. It takes quite a while to learn the typical essential words that can be very different from country to country. This can cost you some misunderstandings... At our arrival at Puerto Montt at lunch time we were terribly hungry. Since ... read more

Feliz Día del Amor!! So last night was my last one in Viña del Mar, and we didn't waste one minute of it sleeping. We started the evening with a dinner at the program director's house...Easter Island dancers came to do a show for us; the pisco sour and Chilean wine flowed like water; we watched slide shows of the trip with sappy background music, and did group dances until we dropped. Then dancing till 6...one more outing with Gabriel and Eduardo, our two wonderful Chilean teaching assistants/hired Chilean friends. Fun! I guess it's been a few weeks since an update...let's see what I can highlight 1. Trip to Santiago! Stayed with Adrienne! Man, so good to see her and catch up. On Friday, we toured the American Embassy...sadly, it's a big ugly building in the ... read more

¡Hola a tod@s! Guess what I did this weekend! I climbed a mountain from bottom to top. I was a little nervous about the whole trip mainly because of the little piece of metal in my little bone that has been such an annoying problem. But I decided to do it, and man, it was a great decision. We began our ascent at 9:15 and the first half of the trail was like any other trail that I've seen in Georgia or South Carolina, and then we "bouldered" for a few hours to reach the peak. Walking/Jumping/Crawling up the boulders was so much fun. My group arrived at the top at 2:30..having taken our time chatting, taking water breaks, and eating fruit cake (yes, someone lugged a 4 pound fruit cake up the mountain). From the ... read more

As usual I wasn’t very lucky with my flight across the ocean. This time it was the weather in Frankfurt that put an end to my dreams of the Chilean sun. As we were about to go down in Frankfurt we were informed that that they had closed the airport due to snow that had to be cleared away from the landing ground. After a while of circling around the plane was redirected to Cologne - less than half an hour away. Landing in Cologne I couldn’t even see the slightest snow flake, and did all of a sudden feel very cheated. As we were waiting for the plane to reful and take us back to Frankfurt, hopefully just in time for the connecting flights, we were informed that the plane was needed somewhere else. So ... read more

It's about time for another update from sunny Viña del Mar... Last weekend the Santiago group came to enjoy the beach with us in Viña, and you know what that means! Adrienne! She stayed with me with my host family and we had a blast. Friday night we explored some of my neck of the woods in Viña and then of course we went out dancing. I don't think I've ever had more fun dancing in my life than that night (well, maybe some nights in Madrid with Tia rival it). amazing! Our late night was followed by an early morning; most of the Vina group headed to a girls' home about 15 minutes away in Vaparaiso where we played for a long time...reading, joking around, jump roping. What an experience. These girls (about 40 live ... read more

Hey everyone!! it has almost been two weeks since I arrived in this beautiful country and I can't tell you how wonderful and relaxing it has been....but I'll try :) My familia chilena is great and I feel like it's home, which I guess happens when you live somewhere for a while. My madre is Sonia and her job is hosting students like me. Her sons, Tito (22 year old medical student) and Rodrigo (19 year old Kinesiology student) are both enjoying their summer break from classes, but spend a good chunck of their days working. We live in a cozy apartment in downtown Viña del Mar, a tourist city that has successfully maintained its small town charm...the huge casino down the street doesn't detract from the plaza and little shops near my house. We spent our time in Cusco relaxing before our trek. Despite being a lovely town with fantastic buildings and history we were a little overwhelmed by all the people hassling us on the street for everything from meals with free pisco to finger puppets. We spent most of our time in the usual Gringo hang-outs, Jack's, Paddy's (the highest Irish owned pub in the world). After two days in Cusco we were ready to leave on our Inca Trek. We weren't doing the classic Inca Trail but what the tour company called a 'community trek'. This involved walking in a nearby valley and staying with the local communities with a percentage of the money we paid going to projects in these communities. The first day of our trek was spent mainly visiting the ruins of Sacsayhuaman ... read more

We were up at 6.30am and on the bus to Valparaiso by 8.00. It was packed with local people and travellers heading to the coast for new year. The journey inevitably took us through the mountains descending very rapidly to the beach resort. The beginning of the 2 hour journey was through dry dusty land. Through the second half we were surrounded by miles of vineyards where the air was fresher and cooler, a pleasure to breath. Noel referred to the Lonely Planet gude to see if we could get a tour of the vineyards. Whilst it is possible there is no wine-tasting and no cheap wine so we thought ´sod that for a game of soldiers.´ Valparaiso used to be a bustling port town as it sits in a huge natural bay. However with the ... read more

Hope you all enjoyed the New Year celebrations wherever you were. We´d planned to celebrate in Valparaíso but when we arrived yesterday afternoon it was so hectic that we decided to retreat into the foothills of the Andes cordillera! There was no accommodation available in Valparaíso anyway, so people were camping, jam-packed like sardines, along the side of the motorway! Glad we gave it a miss because we´ve ended up in a village hotel with views of the peaks in the Cerro La Campana national park and guess what we were woken by on the first of January 2006? An earthquake!!! Only measured 3 on the Richter scale and, to a slumbering Jessie, felt like undulating massage pads in the mattress but it was enough to wake us! Apparently it´s quite unusual to be able to ... read more
