So the last three months or so have been pleasant, if not a bit sweaty, as it has been summer in Santiago, and the weather has been hot, at times unbearably so, but the traffic has been light, and the smog mostly lighter, and it's been a chance to get to the coast and enjoy the beach, and be thankful that we ended up renting a place with a pool. My mind is still in hoser mode, so it is still adjusting to the fact that it is February, and that any time I see a temperature of 35 degrees, it usually says "temperature with windchill" and has a minus in front of it. Heading Out of the City In Chile we tried to do two things: Easter Island and Patagonia. We were unsuccessful at both. We had no interest in Easter Island until our friend Justin planted the seed. Then we spent about a month trying to get airfare, but Lan has a monopoly and can charge ridiculous prices for the five hour flight out into the Pacific. We hoped for some last minute fares, but it looked like it would cost about $1000 a person round trip for about a five to six day stay. That was just not in our budget. Daniel and Jicelyn plan to move to theis seaside village. It is much quieter (and cheaper) than the relatively posh resort of Renaca where they live now. It has very pretty beaches and lots of wild life, including large pelican colonies and sea otters. The best thing about the place was the seafood market. We had the best scallops I've ever tasted, raw, straight off the market, with just lemon juice. They were about 20p each! - yummie.... read more

Last month I shook up my normal back and forth routine to Santiago and hopped on a bus heading north of Valparaiso to a beach town called Maitencillo. A clue that I knew next to nothing about what I was doing was in the fact that I had to keep referring to my guidebook to remember how to pronounce the name. Think, think, and keep repeating to self... Maitencillo, Maitencillo, until it comes naturally. A bit like my problem with the artichokes. The driver asked where I would like to be left in town.
