After saying goodbye to the German girls who we had been travelling with since Peru, we arrived in San Pedro de Atacama and were greeted to some very timely good weather. We stayed in a hostel not far from the centre of the town with Guy and the Spaniards, along with the two English girls who we had bonded with over a good winge on the salt flats trip, Josie and Morwenna. After everyone had had a shower and made themselves fee better after the trip, Ric cooked up a good feast along with his kitchen assistants (the girls) and we all sat down to eat and to have a few drinks. Of course, as per usual, a few drinks turned into drinking games and a lot more drinks and not wanting to end the night there, myself, Ric, Guy, Josie and Morwenna decided we would go out and try and find a bar. Everyone we met on the way said that there was nowhere open and that if there was it would be dead, however we carried on and found one place that at least had a few people in. We decided that we would pretend it was
one of our birthdays in order to get a free drink or two, but that didn´t work so instead we just left with one piece of cake that had been donated to Josie from someone who´s birthday it actually was (that was after she tried to steal the whole cake from them!) When we got back to the hostel we realised that everyone was in bed and after knocking for about 10 mins, I decided I would try and climb over the roof to unlock the gate from the inside.... Of course, just as I got on the roof, the hostel owner opened the gate and I was up on the roof for no reason at all with everyone else already through the gate and inside the premises.
The next day Guy and the Spaniards left for Salta and Me, Ric, Meike and the two girls all left on a 23 hour journey to Santiago. The journey wasn´t too bad apart from the fact they provided no food and all the films they showed were in Spanish and also had Spanish subtitles. Once we got there and had checked in, we decided we were in need of a good
night out, so we all put our names down for the all you can eat, all you can drink BBQ night that the hostel was putting on. After only 5 minutes of sitting on the balcony trying to have a few quiet glasses of wine to start off the night, a group of highly annoying French people came over and sat with us. I don´t mind socialising with people from around the world but their craic was ridiculous, not least of all one in particular called Germain who was possibly the rudest and most obnoxious prick I have ever met. Just to add to this, another 4 Americans then joined us to really crank the extremely bad patter levels up. The only saving grace was the fact that there was also a really cool Aussie couple who joined us, who shared the same intolererance for what was going on as we did. Anyway, in the midst of all this we all managed to make the most of the all you can drink deal and left the hostel pretty merry. I have been told that the club we went to wasn´t too bad, although I can neither confirm nor deny if
this was actually the case. Once I got back, and left the girls to go to their room, I tried to pull a door that lead to ´the wing´of the hostel where my room was, and when it wouldn´t open rather than being logical and trying to push it I went and slept in the reception area. Becoming paranoid that I would get told off 5 minutes later, I got up and went to the girls room to try and find somewhere to sleep, with all the beds occupied, and after standing over them all (probably very creepily from their angle) I curled up on the end of Josie´s bed trying not to wake her. Becoming paranoid that she would wake up and freak out, I tried to sleep on the wooden floor of their room for a while. Eventually I came to the conclusion that if I slept there, not only would she freak out but so would the other 5 girls in the room, so i got up with the intention of somehow getting through the ´locked´door. This time I pushed and of course it opened straight away and feeling like a bit of a plonker I went
straight up to bed... something I could have done about an hour earlier had I not been such an idiot.
The next afternoon it was time to move on again and go to Valparaiso, which was only a few hours west of Santiago and was near a beach. We decided again that we would go out that night as we wouldn´t be able to go out the night after because of an early bus the next day. We left the hostel and immediately bumped into about 6 locals who were heading to where all the main bars were so we decided to tag along. The locals were really nice but a language barrier meant that Ric and Meike were the only two who could really communicate so that left me and the other two girls to just sit on the end of the table and drink some really weird drinks that the guys had ordered for us. Feeling a little bit tipsy at this point, I couldn´t wait to get to a club so we left the locals at the bar and the 5 of us all headed to Huevo, which was a club near to our hostel. For
some reason, once I got there I just went a bit weird and instead of dancing with the others went on numerous wanders to the bar, buying litres of beer, and ´observing´everyone else who was having fun.
Now this next bit I can´t really remember but I have been filled in since as to exactly what happened.... Ric came over and asked me what was going on and why I wasn´t dancing, to this I replied ´I am observing´, he then started shouting at me saying ´I was making him look like a bad friend because I wasn´t having fun´... of course I did the only logical thing anyone would do at this point and started crying... LOL! Not wanting to look like a dick I got up and tried to pretend nothing was wrong by dancing, this didnt really work as I was still bubbling away and wiping my eyes. Luckily at this point, the lights came on and it was time for everyone to leave... I took myself straight home without talking to anyone (out of embarrassment more than anything) and went into an unoccupied double room along with 3/4 of a litre of beer and fell
straight to sleep, leaving the others to piece together exactly what had happened in the dorm next door.
I woke up on our final day in Chile pretty confused as to why I was in a room on my own with a plastic cup full of beer next to me, and tried to get on with the day as if nothing had happened. It wasn´t until half way through the morning when we were out visiting the ascensores of Valparaiso that I asked Ric what had happened and he explained it all. After no one else had mentioned it all morning even though they probably really wanted to, I spoke to the others and apologised for the way I had gone on. It didn´t take too long for the whole thing to become a bit of a laugh and I was rightly the brunt of all the jokes for that day and in fact, every day since, for being a ridiculous emotional drunk!! Ric found a Capoiera group so went to train with them in the afternoon while the rest of us went to check out the beach. While we were there we saw a whole raft of Sea Lions. They were massive and quite ugly to be honest, but they got really close and came right up on to the shore, scaring us all back on to the rocks at least once. That night, after a bit of an eventful night the night before we decided to just go for a meal, have a few glasses of wine and go to bed, ready to get up bright and early the next day and get the bus over the Andes into Mendoza, Argentina.
