News from home...
We found a Swedish newspaper in a news stand! It had already been read, and the crossword puzzle was completed, but still... Santiago has worked very well as a base to plan further trips and for H to recover from her cold. The blazing sun and 30 degrees celcius have certainly helped. As such we haven't spent too much time in Santiago, but noticed a few things worth mentioning.
Pharmacy seems to be the business to be in. The streets are littered with them, especially downtown, and we have no clue as to why. Either the Chileans are a very sickly people, hypocondriacs or very healthy due to the easy access to pharmacies. They look very healthy to us though, and are very friendly.
Chileans are probably the most friendly people we've met on this trip so far. The service is usually superb and things work just as well here as in any western country, which is a more than what you can say about Peru (
Los Uros - floating islands) and certainly Bolivia (
La Paz). Most people we've met try give that little extra and constantly suprise us with their caring nature. As always, you get what you pay for, and Chile is considerably more expensive than Peru and Bolivia.
Santiago itself is fairly clean, for being a big city. About a year ago
We didn't know...
Al Jazeera also sold sandwiches... But maybe it brings in more money than selling ad space. the town replaced all their micros for environmentally friendly top of the line eco-buses, which makes the air a lot more pleasant than for example in La Paz.
The architecture is superb in most areas downtown, where Santiago has managed to blend new and old very nicely.
We definitely have to come back to Chile and Santiago for a closer look in the future. Patagonia would be one obvious place to go to, but since Chile is such a long country it would be a good destination for whatever we want to do - skiing, surfing, hiking, etc.
Sydney next!
A plane with a view
Just after take-off from our short stop in Iquique on way to Santiago (from La Paz). ser valdigt friska ut, och ar valdigt trevliga.
For ungefar ett ar sedan bytte staden ut alla sina minibussar mot nya, miljovanliga eko-bussar, vilket gor luften betydligt renare an i exempelvis La Paz.
Sydney nasta!
