We stayed in Chillan for less than 24 hours. In all honesty it had nothing much to offer. It's principal claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Bernardo O´Higgins - Liberator extraordinaire. He is fondly described in the guide book as the bastard son of an Irish man. We are so proud! Though it was nice to see an Irish name everywhere in Chile. The main streets are named after him everywhere. He is their Daniel O'Connell. The whole country is going nuts in his honour over the next week or so. Talca was our home for a few days. It is only two hours away from Chillan but gave us a completely different experience. Within an hour of arriving we found ourselves sitting in the Tourist Information Office on the central Plaza ... read more

Talca and the Maule Valley So onwards south we arrived at the Maule Valley which is yet another famous wine growing area. Much drier so a different wine from the Cologhua valley we had been in. The roads in Chile are mainly very good. AS it is a long thin country the main route is Ruta 5 which runs down the spine of the country with roads off on one side to the coast and on the other to the high Andes. This is a great roadm fast and relatively free of traffic. It is a toll road and everytime you get off it you pay as well as at places along the route. So make sure you have lots of spare change. Chile's currency is one of those with lots of zero's so when you ... read more

Neil We've now moved south from Santiago into a small university town called Talca. The hostel we're staying at is a 10 minute drive into the countryside from the main town, and is set in beautiful surroundings - a great find. The hostel was built by German couple who extensivley travelled Chilie and then set up the hostel and a travel agency. The place has a real homely feel to it, and meals are cooked each evening by a chiliean chef and served into a cosy wooden panelled dining area where everyone gets together and shares travelling experiences. On our first full day we decided to do some Horse riding! When we awoke it was pouring with rain and really cloudy and miserable looking but we continued with our plans. We were told to take a ... read more

360 km later and its Sunday morning in Casa Chueca, where I´m going to put my feet up for a day and I´ve picked the right place for it. Hammocks, good beer, veggie food and water with magic rocks in it for mystical energy (really). The whole way has been on or beside the motorway, which was horrible coming out of Santiago, but has eased up now, as the further South and more rural its becoming. Santiago was surprisingly laid back, in the Eco Hostel and a rubbishy film in the local cinema. Don´t see ´Beethoven'unless you´re a fan of soft focus sunsets and Ed Harris in a wig. The original Beethoven with the dog was better. It´s just one road going south, The big difference to Argentina is it´s green and there are people, so ... read more
