The sky was clear when we left Calafate. We were driving East however, and fast, so it was highly likely we would meet up again with the storm which we had watched go over us earlier that morning. We did. It was cold. We rose up to meet it, climbing onto the high Patagonia plateau. The temperature dropped to 45 degrees F ( 6 degrees C). The fog came down. We plunged on into the mist, all lights blazing, not knowing quite what would come next. After an hour or two of misery, we watched the clouds lift and drift off to the East. We motored on South to Esperanza (Hope), not even considering a wet gravel short cut down Route 40 to the Chilean Border. Been there. Not doing that. The Westerly winds were good ... read more

The manor houses/palaces of Punta Arenas are some of the first buildings built by brick in the late 1800s and early 19th century Golden Age. Along with other commercial institutions, banks and residences. It was the era od European immigration of cattle keeping, mining and wood production. All these buildings are located around the town square and the French style is notorious. We visited two of these majestic buildings and all the original floor surfaces, fabrics and furnishings, statues and attention to detail remain. Totally breath taking in beauty and regal.... read more

We sailed through the Straights of Magellan to reach Punta Arenas for 2 pm and it was a murky day so not much to see. From there we headed to Ushuaia with the morning cruising through Glacier Alley. This is a channel with many hanging glaciers visible whenever the clouds / rain lift. Glimpses of them were sufficient to get photos. In all we had 3 days at sea. The first was a trip around Cape Horn. We reached there just before dawn and I was thrilled to see the Rock out of our porthole about 5.30. I woke Paul with this exciting news only to receive a grunt so took myself up to the back deck where others had gathered to film as as we sailed by. Around 6 the captain announced that we were ... read more

Our only goal in this port was to see Magellan penguins and from the ferry and on the island we also saw dolphins, petrels, skuas, cormorants, kelp gulls and small starling-like birds. The weather was intermittent rain but that did not affect our enjoyment of the trip. We had heard that cruise line companies charter the ferries so booked with them although speedboats with independent travelers did arrive whilst we were on the island. Loading and unloading the ferry was a tedious affair with a single file stairway and walk from the entrance to the seating area and almost 200 people doing so. Chile does not allow any foodstuffs to be brought ashore so lunchbags were issued as we boarded containing a sandwich, mini biscuit pack and drink. Boredom on the ride meant that we ate ... read more

Geo: -55.9833, -67.2667We arose early again and headed up,to.15 to watch and have breakfast. Unfortunately we picked the wrong side to sit on. The decision about going around was not made until the last minute, but we did circle the horn. The water was pretty rough going around the Horn but not as bad as I had expected. At one point they did close the outside decks do to wind and spray. There is a naval, station there where a family lives. Can't imagine being that isolated, especially with children. It was sort of cool to be that far south. It took about 2 hours for us to circle and then we were out headed north toward the Falkland islands. We are due to tender there tomorrow. So we shall see. The afternoon has turned out to be ... read more

Geo: -53.1548, -70.9113Punta arenas claims to be the Southern most city in South America, the end of the world. It is a quaint city of 127,000 inhabitants. It takes 4 hours by air to get Santiago it takes days to get there driving, because you have to take boats, fairies, and roads. There industry includes fishing mining for copper, and tourism. They cannot grow fruits and vegetables so they import them all making them very expensive. The city has 3 universities We actually started today with sunshine, but it faded quickly. We had a 3 hour city tour this morning. Saw the downtown area where there was a market, city center with huge trees, and a large statue of Magellan. We drove to one of the high points to view the city from above. We stopped ... read more

After Isa´s departure, I went to Punta Arenas, on the Magellan Strait. I got to see some Magallanes penguins on Isla Magdalena reserve, it is the season when the babies come out and start taking their fur off. It was so cute to see them. They are the same size as the parents but furry! Penguins are so funny, they have become one of my favourite animals. I took the time to also visit a museum containing 4 boats replicas: - the first one was "Magellan´s" boat. He did not actually captain this one as their were 5 boats leaving from Spain that year but this is the boat that made it all around the Globe for the first time in History. Magellan died in Asia along the way so his boat did not make it ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Puerto Natales January 20th 2017

Isa and I then crossed the border into Chile and based ourselves in Puerto Natales to get ready for the 6 day trek we were about to do in Torres del Paine National Park. We started by hearing the catamaran we wanted to take on the first day was broken and we would have to walk an extra 5 hours on the first day. Woops. By the time we got there, thankfully it had been replaced with a smaller motor boat, which meant we had to wait a little bit longer to get on it but it was still shorter than walking 5 hours more and risking arriving past dark to our first camp. We therefore walked the 4 hours planned and set camp in Refugio Grey, near the Glaciar Grey. That night was very windy ... read more
