Puerto Williams
Beautiful view from the bay of Isla Navarino After Ushuaia I went by zodiac to Puerto Williams (Isla Navarino). A little bit more south than Ushuaia and a center point to go further to Cape Horn. But let's forget Cape Horn, too expensive, at least 1500 euros to get there. I didn't really book a hostel and the bus driver dropped me into a nice family. Great hospitality!!
Every evening a great dinner with soup, main plate and desert (postre) . I shared a room with a guy (Daniel) from Korea. Cool guy and again a nice occasion to learn my spanish, because he didn't speak English very well.
The next day we decided to look up for la Abuela "Marie Smith Jones". This lady was 83 years old and the last inhabitant on the island of the Yamana tribe.
Some information:
This is a nomadic tribe that lived along the Beagle Channel and the coast near Cape Horn. The Yaghan, also called Yagan, Yahgan (the original spelling), Yámana or Yamana, are the indigenous inhabitants of the islands south of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego extending their presence into Cape Horn. They were known as Fuegians by the English speaking world, but the term is nowadays
Villa Ukika
Uli and Marie Smith Jones, the last indian lady of the Yaghan tribe. avoided as it can refer to any of the indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego. They spoke the Yaghan language that is considered to be a language isolate. The Yaghan were nomads who traveled by canoes between islands to collect food. The men hunted sea lions while the women dived to collect shellfish.
We were so lucky to find la Abuela in her house and we bought a typical handmaded craft of the Yaghan culture (a small version of course). She even let us to have a picture with her, we were so lucky!!
There is also a book written about her, so for those who are interested
Haoa Usi Mitsana
Title of book: Remedio de mi Tierra
By Cristina Zarraga and Oliver Vogel
When my spanish will be better I'm going to try to find the book and read it 😊
In the afternoon we decided to go up to the highest point of the island to the Cerro Bandera.
We went to the top to reach the Chilian flag. I was amazed by the view and I really felt great.
Yes!! Completely freedom!! These are moments in life you will never forget!!
