South of Santiago you are into vineyard country - mile after mile of vines and a lot of familiar names, its like browsing the shelves in the local supermarket. Gradually the vines give way to pasture land and yellow flowers and then to water as we enter the Lake District. Its all on one long straight road, the Pan-American Highway, heading due south - but then I suppose Chile is a long straight country. Its not boring though as running parallel to us are the Andes off in the distance but clearly visible. Every now and then one lone volcano will stand proud with its perfect volcano shape and snow covered top. We stop in Salto de Laja where we have our own personal waterfall as a backdrop from our hotel room veranda and Osorno where ... read more

Public transport in much of Patagonia is difficult but once off the beaten track it can become almost impossible. We tried to get from Esquel in Argentina to Chaiten in Chile and then by ferry to the island of Chiloe, it's doable but not practical - at least for us. It all started well, at Esquel we thought we were in luck, the bus to the border runs only on Monday and Friday, it was Friday - result :-) Crossing the border was simple and straightforward (it's not always like that between Argentina and Chile), only when we got to Futaleufu in Chile did things start to go pear shaped. There are bed and breakfast places but none are listed online so it's difficult to make a reservation in advance, as it's still early in the ... read more

I traveled to the small village of Futaleufu, Chile in January 2006 and February 2007 to raft the famous Class 5 Futaleufu River. January 2006 Trip My first trip to Futa I traveled alone, leaving my family of 4 for the week. I chose Expediciones Chile (www.exchile.com) as my outfitter based on their reputation for safety and, more important, that they offer a lodging option that does not involve camping...they have a lodge with hot showers in the Town of Futa, in addition to an Eco-Camp out in the woods. I chose to travel to Futa via Esquel, Argentina, not via Puerto Montt Chile, as most people do. To get to Futa via Chile, one needs to fly to Santiago, then to Puerto Montt, then take a small charter plane to the hamlet of Chaiten, and ... read more

Futaeufu is one of those places. Now I have it on a screen on front of me it's fine, but in my daily diary entries, that sneaky extra u before the second f had a nasty habit of going missing. I spent three days in Futa, which was a little bit more than I'd intended. However, my next destination was Chaiten, and as I'd heard on the grapevine that traffic in and out of the town was pretty much non-existent due to the volcano, I decided not to chance it with my thumb, and wait for the bus. Therefore, I had to find ways to spend three days. Most people come to Futaleufu for the the rafting, which is supposedly world class. But for world class rafting, you pay world class prices, and as I wasn't ... read more
