It was already an adventure to get there, once I got there, I got stuck for a week cause there is only one bus per week. It was a happy accident though cause it became one of my favourite places ever!! It is a tiny town not too far from the border of Argentina and at the beginning of the carretera austral which is the unpaves road of Chilean Patagonia. The hostal was all built in wood with massive windows so when I arrived on a sunny day, it gave uch an incredible view on the surroundings. Everybody in the hostal stayed for longer than they planned due to the live of the place and then because of buses or weather! So we all got to become friends which was great for the new year! And everywhere you look there are flowers, babies and snowy mountains. And of course the famous river Futa. Today we head off from Futaleufu where we've had a great time seeing the pretty town, the river and neighbouring mountains. We became lost yesterday afternoon and were adopted by a young farm kid, who showed us the Zeta one of the famous rapids on the Futa. He lives on a farm in a very remote part of the river near the national park, and was a very willing guide. And before we left, he played guitar and sang us a couple of songs. It was precious. In summer people come to Futeleufu from around the world to ride the class 4, 5 and 5+ rapids on the mint green Futa, and we could see why. It is ... read more

Its 10pm and I'm in front of a roaring fire in a cabanya in Futelefu. Its freezing outside and I'm exhausted from concentrating all day on potholed, sometimes icy gravel roads, the occassional crazy Chilean driver, and magnificent scenery at every turn. Perhaps this blog should be called: " a postcard on every corner and other challenges of driving in Pategonia....." Though I'm gradually getting used to driving on the right hand side of the road, and not veering left at oncoming trucks... We left Puerto Montt the day before yesterday, 2 days to drive 260kms to this magic place... Futalefu; makes me think of wizened old Chinese men catching flies with chopsticks.... The northern end of the Carretera is broken by extremely steep terrain (cliffs into ocean), so it involves ferry crossings.... these are ocean ... read more

It was a pretty short sleep before I had to get up and get on the bus to head north. So once I was on the bus, I got right back to work at getting some sleep. I had a bit of a realization that Coyahaique was by far the biggest place I had been in since Buenos Aires, and even though it only has 50,000 people in it, Coyahaique felt like civilization again after spending so many days in tiny mountain villages and hiking towns. It was a fully functioning city, with industry and everything. So I almost felt a little reluctant to plunge back into the remoteness of the Carretera Austral. But mostly I new I needed to keep moving. The scenery was good when I was awake as we pressed further northward into ... read more

The further south you head, the more you find infrequent public transport. This time we are stuck in Chaiten, a small volcanic town of only 8 streets buried in ash, no telefoniocas, no hot water and nothing to do. There are 2 restaurants which don't sell cafe con leche and 3 mini markets, where i go to buy my powdered milk to add to instant coffee (im desperate) and yet they still charge you the price of a cappuccino. Chaiten is meant to be a beautiful tourist town surrounded by a long coastline and national parks, yet i feel i'm in a prison unable to escape for another 2 nights as the only 1 bus that leaves and enters town doesn't depart Thursdays! We luck out again. Due to the volcanic activity and uncertainty we don't ... read more

Hello again! Our next stop after our long stay in Puerto Natales was the small town of Futaleufu. We headed here for one reason only- white water rafting. After rafting in both Africa and Ottawa, both Laura and I were hooked and lucky for us, Futaleufu is consider anywhere from the 1st to 3rd best white water rafting location in the world depending on which list you are looking at. As I mentioned in the last blog, 25hr bus ride from Puerto Natales to Coyhaique was our first task. To our surprise, we actually traveled almost all 25hrs in Argentina! Because the south of Chile is so disjointed with islands, etc., north bound buses originating in Chile and going to other locations in Chile are required to use Argentinian roads. This was not an issue, it ... read more
