We woke to the first pouring rainstorm we have had thus far. Not a huge deal for us as we were Ferry hopping all day. But it was certainly a big deal for a young couple that was backpacking and hitch hiking . We ended up driving them to the first Ferry and riding it with them .......as well as the second and third.....virtually spending the day with them. Nacho and Priscilla are from Chile. They are students backpacking on summer break. We learned some new Spanish words and in return taught them some English and how to play Loco Ocho ( crazy eights:) Soooo much fun! We made it just before it closed and found out we had 3 options 1. turn back and go over the Argentine border again and then back into main land Chile 2. wait for 5 days in Chaiten to catch the big ferry ... read more

After our pleasant stay in Valdivia, we headed east to Lago Ranco for a short climbing trip outside the village of Llifen. The drive along the lake was among the most beautiful any of us have ever done. The access to the climbing area was through a hot springs, which was undergoing some construction, and after we chatted with the guys for a couple minutes we made our way down the dirt and grass road to the crag. We got very humbled by our first few climbs. Comments like ”This looks like an easy climb” quickly turned into grunts and groans as we got picked apart by the overhanging walls. Seemingly perfect in-cuts turned out to be nasty slopers. Into the afternoon we met a nice elderly rancher whose property we were on. He welcomed us ... read more
