Sarah: We are currently sat killing some time at our hostel in Pucon before our bus by watching Everton vs Saints (with English commentary no less). Saints are currently 1 - 0 down, so a bit tense at the moment, but hopefully by the time I finish this there'll be better news!
To pick up from where I left off on Wednesday, we did brave the rain and finally get our postcards posted with a stop for some coffee and cake to reward ourselves. My saddle was still sore
until Friday after our bumpy bike ride, but I'm now able to sit down without grimacing! The rain didn't let up for the rest of the day and so after our short trip in to town we cooked up some pasta and had a cosy evening in.
Thursday was another washout, but after our rest day Wednesday we braved the rain to go to the hot springs. We headed out on the bus to 'Los Pozones'. We didn't really know what to expect, but we were armed with our swimming things, some empanadas and lots of water to hydrate after a dip in the pools. The rain continued to fall as
we dipped our toes in the first outdoor pool. It was lovely and warm and a very strange sensation with the rain falling!
After a splash around in the first pool that was the largest of the pools, we made our way around the others, spending the most time in the hottest ones that we came across! There's only so much splashing around in hot springs that one can do so after we'd had a dip in all but the freezing cold spring, we dried off and headed to the bus stop. The rain started to come down harder and we got pretty drenched as we took a wander to kill time before the bus arrived.
By the time we were back at the hostel it was early evening and we were both soggy from the rain and tired. Nick popped out for a drink and I had a nice hot shower and called myself love. The leftover pasta was a welcome easy dinner and a relatively early night was had, with the rain still coming down outside.
Friday brought about a slight improvement in the weather, but it was still overcast and a bit muggy. After
two fairly sedentary days, we packed up some sarnies and headed out for an 11 mile walk that we could do straight from the hostel to the other side of the river that fed into the lake. It was a good flat walk, nice and peaceful with lots of birdlife to be seen. Before we came, Nick got me a Costa Rica bird guide, which I'm looking forward to using and I feel like we would have benefitted from a bird guide for every location so far! There were all sorts of wading birds, small-ish birds of prey, lots of sparrow-like birds and the house next door to the hostel has hummingbirds galore on their sugar-feeders!
The cheese sarnies were enjoyed at the volcanic sand beach by the lake at the halfway point of the walk and then we began the loooong walk home. We had heavy legs and didn't seem to be making much progress. However, one foot in front of the other will always get you back eventually! Quick snooze, showers and then we were out to dinner on our last night in Pucon.
We headed for a Uruguayan BBQ place that we'd passed before in
the town. There was an open BBQ at the front and a lively atmosphere inside. We ordered the BBQ mix for two or three people which included a big fat sirloin, ribs, kebabs, sausage and black pudding. We made the wise decision of ordering only a side salad and forgoing the chips! The meat was deeeelicious, and although we were defeated by the quantity, a doggy bag was made up for us to take home for some tasty sarnies on the Saturday!
I'm now finishing this blog at Temuco airport, having just scoffed said leftover meat sarnies (very yummy). Unfortunately the mighty Saints didn't do the business against Everton, so it's been a fairly muted day so far. However (like the Saints) we march on! We're at the airport nice and early to catch our flight to Santiago, followed by one night there, then Sunday, we fly to La Paz, Bolivia!
Happy Easter! Hope everyone is eating lots of tasty chocolate for us. Most of the stuff we've had so far has definitely been sub-Cadbury standard!
