Hi - so survived favela visit intact :-) Actually felt pretty safe with great guide (see photo - picture of favela tattooed over both legs), explaining history & everyday life in Rocinhas society. Apparently last army invasion was in Nov 2010 when the drug lords spread oil on the streets to stop the tanks getting in....

Now joined with Tucan tour, first stop sleepy colonial town of Paraty on the Atlantic coast. Great boat trip out to deserted islands where we dived in and swam to sandy beaches. Also eating lots of tasty ice cream (sold by the kilo) and cakes which are wheeled through the streets on trolleys all day long.

Writing from Sao Paulo - the largest city in southern hemisphere, football crazy with loud explosions whenever team scores...

Paraty memories
Hi there! I got to your post by chance looking for info to get back to Paraty, I went there 2 years ago and it was great, the people from the Geko hostel and Misti chill hostel had some wicked partys by pontal beach, it was something else haha thanks for sharing this, I've got such good memories from the bay trips!
