Christmas Eve in Bolivia...what can I say; the sun is shining, its about 25oC with a nice breeze, and still we´re missing home....must be mad. It just doesn´t feel like christmas......then I guess it is only one out of our lives and we are in a beautiful country. Shouldn´t complain!!! Ok, forst of all I should appologise for the lack of intersting pictures, or any at all for that matter. The bloody computers here don´t have USB ports, and even if the did the connection is so slow, I don´t think they could handle downloading photos. So, sorry about that....will try and add some at a later date. Right, where was I.... We flew in to Santa Cruz from La Paz, last wednesday, and t was like coming to another country. When we left La Paz ... read more

Santa Cruz is the biggest and the most modern city in Bolivia. We found there the best night life in Bolivia. From there we headed to a really nice and laid back town called Samaipata, near the national park Amboro. Just after arriving to Samaipata we heard the bad news from back home, about the developing situation in the border of Lebanon and the Gaza strip. Ever since that moment, the trip hasn't been the same for me, as I was half preoccupied with the problems in Israel, being worried about my family and friends, checking whenever possible 'ynet' for the news. Anyway, in Samaipata we made a few day hikes to the national park Amboro, to a nice laguna and some waterfalls near by and to the El Fuerte ruins, dated back from the Inca ... read more

Having spent so long in Sucre I was looking forward to getting back to nature a little bit. Thus, I headed to the small town of Samaipata, about 10 hours north-east of Sucre. Only problem was that the bus would arrive there at about 4 a.m. and drop me at the side of the road - or that was the plan. Predictably, they forgot about me - but luckily I was on the ball and managed to get the driver to stop only 200 metres past the town!!! One of the big draws in Samaipata are the ruins of "El Fuerte", a pre-columbian site dominated by an absolutely huge rock complete with carvings that are apparently pre-Inca. Unfortunately, those pesky tourists that used to climb all over, and graffiti on the rock back in the day, ... read more

This is Sara to narrate our last 3 days in Saimapata and all our exciting travels back to La Paz. Matt woke up on the morning of March 21 feeling very under the weather with a cough sounding suspiciously like the one Jill had. He decided that it was prudent that he did not go and we both concurred. So after having another wonderful organic breakfast at our dream hostel, La Vispera, Jill and I set off to the Amboro highlands for a hike among the giant ferns. We were introduced to our spanish speaking guide "Don Gilberto" who is reasonably famous as an expert tour operator in Saimapata (aka he is in the guidebook) as well as the Israeli couple who would be accompanying us. The other guide, a German, who was leading a group ... read more

Well, after a throughly frustrating attempt to post a entry last night, where the computer shut off 3 times while I was attempting to post, I am back to try again. As Samaipata has only one real internet option, I´m stuck back at the same place. Anyway, we made it here safely and had our first of three one day tours in an attempt to find Sara more birds. Based on the last few weeks, I foresee many future trips centered around birding. Now, for our travels from Rurrenabaque and Santa Cruz to reach our current locale, under the alternate title, ¨Travel and Rest¨, which is less exciting than it sounds, but I´ll do my best. After the last entry, we settled into a bit of a rut. The heat and humidity of the pampas had ... read more

I´m back in Samipata and its hot hot hot!! woopie! finally! Today I visited the Amboro nationl park. Its absolutely huge and covers areas of rainforest, semi tropical forests and mountains. I visited a region called the Volcanes which arent the lava spewing type of mountains but just weird, huge, beutiful red mountains nestled together and surrounded by gorgeous forests. I went with two french tourists (who were a little strange and werent half as fun as my previous french friends!) and a guide who spoke no english. I managed to understand most of what he said but it was hard going at times. Before we started off he pulled a huge machette out of the car. I asked him why he needed such a huge knife and he said "serpentinas" I guessed thats that meant ... read more

Id had enough of the cold and the fog so I decided to head to another village further west called Vallegrande. Its a good jumping off point for visiting the canyon and village where Che Guevara was captured, held and finally executed. I thought it would be quite an interesting trip and a good thing to do before it becomes too much of a tourist attraction. I took the local bus which was crowded and really bumpy (hardly any of the road was paved) and i was the only tourist and after a few accusing stares (something bolivian are good at) people warmed to me when I spoke spanish to them. When I arrived I ran into Melodie, a french canadian girl Í'd met earlier in the week. She had been unsuccessful in her quest for ... read more

So here I am in Samipata, its a little village 3hrs to the West of Santa Cruz and is meant to be the "perfect place to chill out for a couple of days" or so lonely planet says but its absolutely freezing. Theres a fog thats engulfed the whole valley so its wet and cold all the time and its meant to last until Tuesday! Bugger! I came here for some sun! Also I have left most of my stuff in Santa Cruz (Im getting fed up with how heavy my backpack is) and only brought skirts and vest tops! Im so glad i picked up my fleece at the last minute otherwise i truly would be frozen! Im wearing everything Ive brought with me, including my pyjamas! Samipata is about the same size as Limekilns ... read more

- FOOD & DRINK: Bolivian wine 'Kohlberg' very good. Hot choc with breakfast - yum. Food in the best restaurant for under 3 quid. None when it was needed on a long bike ride. - AREA: Beautiful little village where the locals from Santa Cruz escape to for their weekends away. Amazing mountainous scenery all around the town, long walks, long mountain bike rides up and down the hills to waterfalls. 'El Fuerte' site - Pre Inca and Inca engravings and and remains of an Inca town. - PEOPLE: Very nice. Big families who run the hotels, lots of hippies on holiday. - WEATHER: Mostly hot sun but torrential rain and strong wind when I really didn't need it (cycling uphill on a bike). Sat 14th May: Got up early to make my way to Samaipata ... read more
