Don Viktor's superhuman vision allowed him to see the "path". Although to us it just looked like stones and shrubs in all directions, he insisted that we were not lost, and almost crossed us in to Argentina (illegally, of course).

Almost at once the whole community congregated by our car.

A huge relief to know we were safe and warm for the night after the Kolpani community took us in to their homes and gave us a warm bed, and more importantly their laughter, which kept our mind off the car trouble.

Don Viktor and our host in Kolpani became good friends almost immediately, chatting away in a mixture of Aymara and Spanish.

It was the host’s teenage son’s first time seeing a digital camera, so Tom gave him a short lesson on how to use his SLR camera and some tips on taking good pictures, and then left him with it to go and take some pictures of his friends and family in the Kolpani community. He returned later with these suprisingly good shots.

I'm sorry you had such a rough time but am happy to get a good chuckle out of your story. I guess all the bad stories about drunk guides in the Salares are true!
