Feb 24 –El Chalten –1ère balade jusqu’à Laguna Torre / 1st walk to reach Laguna Torre

Le site windguru avait dit que le ciel se dégagerait à partir de midi, il fallait vraiment lui faire confiance pour y croire en se levant le dimanche matin, la pluie continuait et n’avait pas arrêté de toute la nuit, ce qui commençait a rendre tout le monde d’humeur maussade. Et puis, à 11h, stop. Ni une ni deux, on embarque sac à dos et pique-nique, et on s’en va pour la balade annoncée de 6h/6h30 A/R et 20 km pour Laguna Torre au pied du mont Torre à 3100 m (voire 2 jours pour le Lonely Planet des treks Maria J, ils conseillaient de dormir au camp avant de revenir !). Toujours pas de Fitz Roy en vue au fait, à croire qu’il a disparu !

Le sentier est étonnamment et agréablement sec, la terre a tout absorbé. Nous longeons la rivière encaissée, passons de belles cascades, traversons la forêt où même les oiseaux sont silencieux, attendant d’être sûr qu’il ne pleut plus (bon en fait, on va se reprendre la pluie hein, opération coupe-vent et couverture de sac à dos), puis des clairières d’arbres mort et découvrons les premiers sommets avec leur collerette de nuages. Quelques temps plus loin, c’est finalement le lac, le glacier (rien à voir avec Perito Moreno on s’entend bien, mais il se méritait plus !) et le pic Torre. Il fait un peu frisquet alors nous redescendons. Encore un petit chouia de pluie sur le retour et nous terminons la balade sous un grand soleil. Cela fait du bien de se décrasser un peu pour cette première balade facile qu’on a fait en 5h15/5h30 environ (ce qui ne veut pas dire que je n’ai pas eu les jambes lourdes le soir !) Et vers 20h, enfin, la vue du Fitz Roy !

>PDJ : je comprends mieux pourquoi les gens viennent jusqu’à El Chalten, les environs sont vraiment sympa avec des vues magnifiques à portée de jambes.

Windguru website forecast said the sky would be clear midday, and we really had to trust it to gain a little bit of confidence because it rained all night and it was still raining when we woke up. The mood was not that great for any of us in the hostel to be honest! And then, at 11 am, it stopped raining! We had to act fastly, just time to prepare the lunch pack and take the rucksack and here we go. We chose the 6h/6h30 return and 20 km trek to Laguna Torre, at the bottom of mount Torre (3100 m). by the way, Fitz Roy is still not visible.

The trail is surprisingly but nicely dry, you couldn’t tell it rained that much just a few hours ago. We are walking along the river below us, are passing waterfalls, forest. Even birds are quiet, waiting for the weather to be settled (they were right, because it started raining again, but it was manageable), then wet meadows with dead trees. Then we can admire in front of us the snowed top of the mountains surrounded by clouds. A little bit later on, we finally arrive at the lake and the glacier (no need to compare with Perito Moreno to be clear, but the outcome was more rewarding!) and the Torre peak. It is a little bit chilly so we only stayed half an hour and went back, with a little bit of rain the way back but we finish the walk under the sun. It’s really good to walk with this first easy hike, done in 5h15/5h30 (easy, but my legs hurt so badly in the evening!). And finally, at 8 pm, the first view at Fitz Roy!

>TOTD: I now understand why people come to El Chalten, the surroundings are beautiful, with splendid views after a short walk, just straight from the village.
