El Calafate: Danger, Thick Ice - Peligro, hielo grueso

I came to El Calafate primarily to see the Perito Moreno glacier. The first view of the 'frozen river' that is the glacier is very impressive although photographs do not really give an idea of the size of the glacier. The immobility implied by the term 'frozen river' is not really accurate either as the glacier is moving forward two metres a day. There are also explosions periodically as chunks fall off the face of the glacier and crash down onto the surface of the lake. The terminus (face) of the Perito Moreno Glacier is 5 kilometres (3 miles) wide, with an average height of 74 metres (240 feet) above the surface of the water of Lake Argentino. A very impressive place for the glacier alone.

Another day I walked around a park in El Calafate that had various historical models in it, for instance of the explorer Perito Moreno and of the naturalist Charles Darwin. I noticed a realistic model of a bird on a stone by the side of the path - suddenly it moved and started to walk off.

[Llegué a El Calafate principalmente para ver el glaciar Perito Moreno. El primer punto de vista del "río congelado" que es el glaciar está muy impresionantes (ver la primera fotografía). Fotografías aunque realmente no dan una idea de la tamaño del glaciar. La inmovilidad que implica el término "congelados río" no es realmente exacto, ya sea como el glaciar se está moviendo adelante dos metros cada día. También hay explosiones periódicamente como trozos caiga la frente del glaciar y caían en el superficie del lago. El término (el frente) del Perito Moreno Glaciar (ver la segunda fotografía) se encuentra a 5 kilómetros de ancho, con una altura promedio de 74 metros por encima de la superficie del agua del lago Argentino. Un lugar muy impresionante para el glaciar solo.

Otro día que caminaba por un parque en El Calafate que había varios modelos históricos en el, por ejemplo, del explorador Perito Moreno y del naturalista Charles Darwin. Me di cuenta de un modelo muy realista de un pájaro en una piedra al lado de la ruta - de repente se movió y empezó a alejarse (ver la fotografía tercera).]
