Ushuaia
downtown Not really. still can't afford the US$5000 real trip, but we did get within 900km on our little boat trip out to see some more penguins and seals out of Ushuaia. There were 2 styles of boat trips to choose, a smaller more intimate trip that didn't go as far and a Larger more cruise boat style that went for 5.5 hours. Carol was worried that the bigger boat would be full of old people. We chose the bigger boat and what can I say, they put a phil collins dvd on for the return trip. It's okay, but we would recommended the smaller trips to anyone else. The next day we climbed up everest/K2, i am fairly sure it was one those anyway, to see a Glacier just north of ushuaia. Needless to say it was a fair bit harder than we were conditioned for. Fantastic thing to see.
From there we went to El Calafate. Which again was a painful journey with the border crossings through Chile and back into Argentina again. We were here to see the Perito Moreno glacier. This was Carols second time to see it, and it is still amazing second time around. We
met some Spanish girls and rented a car to go out to it - the Spanish girls opted to drive as there is no way we'd be brave enough to drive in this country! Its an impressive thing, and we saw some massive chunks falling off. Its bigger than Buenos Aires, and it moves forward 2m each day.
After the trip to the glacier, we took a long long bus journey to Bariloche. It took us 32 hours but we made it! We are just stopping here one night, just to sample some of the great chocolate and ice cream. And today we head off to Mendoza for 2 days where we hope to do some wine tasting - looking forward to that!
And Happy Birthday to Graham and Fiona you old farts, would you like a copy of that Phil Collins dvd???
