For those who are reading this blog and who already hiked up to Refugio Frey – I know there are not so many of you but sill – you’re going to say – and I agree with you – WHAAAT, this is so lame ??!! But it can happen you know, the thing is we never found the start of the trail and the signpost…I know and I confirm (now) that it was clearly indicated (when you look into the right direction). We just kept going just after getting off the collectivo. We asked a guy from the station who said “yes, this way, any way is fine” showing us vaguely the ski tracks in front of us. So you got it, we never made to the refuge. Actually, we started and kept walking to high and too deep up the mountain. But anyway, it was a beautiful day and this alternative tour was great, I shall advise you to follow these non tracks. We walked up 1000+ meters through ski tracks and deserted ski 1 cable car stations. Not so deserted, because after 1h30 we finally met an embarrassed worker who broke the news that we were totally in the wrong direction. Disappointment…But he told us we could reach the refuge by another way, at the top of the mountain. Hope! Then disappointment again: at the very top of Punta Princesa (2000m +), we could see a tiny trail at the beginning but couldn’t tell where it was going, and there was the ravine on the right hand side (and supposedly the refuge on the other side of the mountain). So we stopped, because there were only 2 of us and local people we met before said it was kind of dangerous. Frustrating? A little bit but not that much because we followed the crest with splendid views and not a tourist! Going down was not an easy task and there were again lots of options, hard to choose the one that will lead us the quickest to the starting point and the ski resort. And when we arrived, we eventually saw the signpost, indeed clearly visible! Well, I left Cerro Catedral with beautiful
images in mind and a sunburnt on the calf
>TOTD: I shall maybe thing of creating a very customized map with alternative routes, off the beaten track?
