Gordon in the way of the Town Hall
Landed at San Carlos de Bariloche in Patagonia after a smooth flight via Lan. We arrived at 8.30 pm to bright sunlight and a few degrees change in the temperature. It was still daylight well after 10 pm.

The organisational arrangements are still running smoothly, although a slight hiccup over the room allocation in our '4 star' hotel - maybe once a long time ago. However the whole place is 'quaint' with a feeling that we could be in Austria or Switzerland. There are wooden chalets and ski lifts, and I bet the odd cuckoo clock to boot.

The whole town is a monument to the tourist - loads of shops, restaurants - and backpackers, coach tourists and chocolate lovers. Yes, every 4th shop is a chocolate emporium with more types of chocolate that anyone can imagine.

Away from the town is the most fantastic scenery of lakes, snow capped mountains and forests. Every turn of the road brings a new fantastic view. I hope the pictures do justice to the description. The way to see this place is to use one of the many tour buses and take a panoramic view from the ski lifts that operate

in the summer as a tourist attraction.

It is still hot in the sun, but can be quite cold in the shade. We dug the sweaters out as we are about 2000 ft above sea level - but hiding from the sun at 5.00 pm after an eight o'clock start today. Tomorrow it is a 12 hour tour of the peaks and a walk round San Martin de Los Andes with a 7.00 am start. Sunday sees us starting a 2 day cruise through the lakes and rivers before crossing the border into Chile.

Wow, when we were there it constantly rained and we struggled to find anywhere to stay as the ski season was in full flow - it's pretty stunning in the sun!
