the atún canyon
the atun canyon at the base of the andes in mendoza province For easter break i went camping in the atúel canyon near san rafael in the mendoza wine country. the atun canyon is sort of like argentina´s grand canyon, created by a river at the foot of the Andés. i went with an argentine tour company, so besides the our group of students, the rest were porteños (residents of BsAs). After arriving 12 hours late because of a bus breakdown (welcome to S A) we actually camped out in the canyon next to the river. We went horseback riding up the surrounding hills, we also went rafting down the river, which was fun albeit not challenging as it was only a level 2. One day a group of us, foreigners and argentines, paid a guy with a truck at the campsite to haul us down the road where we went to some wineries. My highlight was when i went to the open air boliche (dance club) in the mountains overlooking the canyon lake. I had a great time in part because I was the only exchange student to go with a group argentines I had met. Definately worth white water rafting on two hours sleep.
