So, after school we go to Cala Pizza, a little bar/cafe/pizza/empanada place next to the school for a quick beer and empanada. Quick sidestep. Empanadas. They´re like little cornish pasties. It freaked me out the first day I was here, when I was on the bus and out of the window I saw a heard of giant cornish pasties wandering around. Anyway, we were trying to decide where to go last night, as we wanted to go somewhere different, somewhere in an area we´d not been before. So we asked Andrea, our friendly waitress, who has been excellent the whole time we´ve been here, to help us out. "Why don´t you go to Acabar?" she asks, "they have lots of board games". I have to admit I was not initially enthusiastic, but went with it. Oh, ... read more

Major breakthrough!! (and quick I might add) I spent the entire last night speaking (and understanding) Spanish. It innocently started out as any other night with four other kids from school. After a walking tour of the neighborhood of San Telmo, which I will talk about later, we stopped to eat in a famous ´parrilla´, or grill, to have a meal. We started out with a liter (that´s bigger than a bottle) of wine for 6 pesos, for two people. Yah, jaw dropped to the floor. And it wasn´t the typical crappy house wine, it was nice and drinkable. Then for our meal, the majority of us took the ´bife de lomo´, or tenderloin steak, for 12 pesos. People, for FOUR dollars! I also ordered grilled red peppers on the side, for six pesos, and it ... read more

I´m constantly amazed by this city! It´s incredible that I can go out with some friends, find a quiet bar, just chat, drink slowly, not party, not go to a disco, simply sit and chat quietly with friends....til 8 in the morning. Dammit, how can a quiet night still end in almost no sleep?!!! Think on..... ... read more

Hola todos. Today was the first official day of class. I took a placement test yesterday and they put me in Intermediate Level 1. Which is basically gonna be a review of the last semester I had of spanish about a year ago, which I totally need. The teacher doesn't even know English it seems, so we can only communicate in Spanish, which of course is what we all need. There are about 25 kids in my class, all from the U.S. and all about my age. We had a good time today, played a game to learn some Spanish vocab and did some exercises in the workbook. The class is really long though, 5 hours a day. We get two breaks, one for 15 minutes and another for 30 min. The class I was placed ... read more

Wow. That was fun!!! My quiet night turned into a trip to the Bonbonera for the first home game of the season against Lanus. Somehow we ended up in the upper tier of the north stands even though we had ticket for the bottom tier of the south stand, but hey, it wasn´t a bad position! The mid tier of our stand was where the real action was though, with the drums and the band and all the noise. Every now and then they´d be jumping to one of their songs and the whole stand would wobble. Hmmm. Anyway, the result was good, the football was good (the 2nd goal particularly), and there were no riots as far as I could tell! Dale Boca!!!! ... read more

Hola todos! I have finally made it here to the beautiful, busy and HOT Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tonight marks the end of my third day here, although it's hard to count the first day because I was so out of it from traveling for the previous 24 hours. I left Washington, DC at 2:30 on Thursday afternoon and flew to Miami. I had a three hour layover there, and they boarded the plane for BsAs around 8:30 pm. The plane ride was over 9 hours, and for the most part pretty crappy. I "slept" most of the way, but it was probably one of the most uncomfortable nights I've ever had. Being here makes it worth it though. After the plane lands I make my way to customs, which had a huge line that took over ... read more

Here at last! 3 months of all play and no work here we come. We spent a very enjoyable couple of days staying in the bohemian San Telmo area, doing little except eating, drinking and sleeping. Apart from a short walk around the centre we completely failed to do any siteseeing. The night life and food here is fantastic (well at least the steaks are, neither of us have eaten anything not from a cow yet!). We´re both looking foreward to spending some more time here at the end of our trip, but for now have got a bus to catch and friends to meet in Peninsula Valides.... read more

I hope this entry will be slightly more comprehensible than the previous jet lagged one! After my last email session I headed off into the sweltering heat to find something to eat. My sister has told me that I need to notice the details, so to start 1. Coca cola is sold in 350cm3 bottles 2. Dogs are very common in Buenos Aires, from your bog standard Heinz 57 mongrel, to you 3 Dalmations, Gt Dane (white), Irish setter and Collie. All good city dogs in my opinion... 3. My sunglasses seem to give the world a slightly pinkish hue, so I feel very much as if I´m looking through rose tinted spectacles. Not a bad sensation, just slightly odd when you take them off! A little more generally... ....Buenos Aires was very hot - so ... read more

I´ve made it. I still feel a little numb, like this is all happening in a dream, or at least happening to someone else. Shed the inevitable tears as I said good bye to my Mum and sister at the departures gate, and again speaking to Andy as I neared the Boarding gate, and then yet again when I read the lovely cards that my family had sent with me. Not bad going really. Now the jet lag is kicking in, but I´m determined to stay awake until after supper. I arrived in Madrid with only 40mins to transfer, as we spent at least an hour on the plane sitting outside the terminal at Heathrow! The flights were ok, although the entertainment (Oliver Twist and Zorro), and the food ( Iberia specials of tinned cold mushrooms, ... read more
