Buenos Aires
Famous pink house of Evita! We decided against another long bus journey and to fly from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires. We didn’t fancy the long bus journey and there was not much difference in the price, 110 pound to fly for 4 hours or 80 pound to get the bus in 50!!
The flight it self had some amazing views over the Beagle Channel with the mountains reflecting on them like a mirror as we took off from Ushuaia, we then passed over the snowy Fuegian mountains and Andes on our way to our first stop in El Calafate. Usually when flying you hate having to take a detour but for us it was another chance to see some of the beautiful things we have seen, but this time by air! We could see the glacial green Lake Argentino with lots of floating ice bergs and more of the great scenery. We then finally headed north to the warmer climates of Buenos Aires and as we came into touch down we could see the lights of the city and it looked very impressive and for me as usual when I´m on a plane looking out for any football stadiums and I managed to get a
glimpse of Rivers.
We only planned to stay for one night and head to Rosario a city 4 hours away the next day and then return to BA after that. You may think this was a bit strange but we did this because there was no football games on until the weekend and for me football was the main purpose to coming here! So the first night we checked into the hostel what would be our home for a week or so after returning from Rosario and then headed out into the city. As we hoped the weather was warm enough about 15-20°c which we needed as we planned to get rid of a lot of our warm weather gear including the coats we bought in Chile about 7 weeks ago! We found a few street people hanging about a park and thought we would give the stuff to them and headed back to the hostel to get the stuff. We had three shopping bags full and when we were leaving the hostel they just presumed we were going to do are laundry and told us they would do it for us. We then explained what we were doing
and they told us they work with a children’s orphanage and they would appreciate them. So we gave the stuff to them instead.
After Rosario (see separate blog) it was back to BA and we loved it, so much to see and do. The place is just like any of the popular European capitals. We spent the week sight seeing by day and getting drunk and eating as much beef as possible by night. Some of the of the famous sights, including the Obelisco, similar to Cleopatra’s Needle in London which was stone throw from our hostel (Buenos Aires - HI Hostel Suites Obelisco), Casa Rosa, the Pink house, made famous by Eva Perons political speeches from the balconies you may have seen the film with Madonna in Evita and many beautiful old Colonial style buildings with plenty of history.
We also had a look around the antiques shops in San Telmo and then having a drink in a pretty square watching Tango dancers. Argentina is the birthplace of Tango and you get to see it everywhere, but for me seeing it once was enough! One of my favourite places was Puerto Madryn the docklands area of the
city very similar to London with lots of nice boats in the dock and fantastic restaurants, bars and posh apartments over looking the water front. It was a great place to chill out in the sun and have a few drinks whilst trying to recover from one of the many hangovers!
One of the other tourist places is Caminito in the area of La Boca and very close to the Bombonera stadium so parts of the area can be a bit dodgy. Because of this we stuck to the tourist trail where there are lots of police and had a look around. The main street has lots of different bright and colourful houses, the reason for this is its very close to the docklands and a ship builders so years ago what ever paint was spare (spare in the loosest term!) the people would take home and paint their houses, not bothered on the colour and how it looked! With the occasional Tango dancers dancing around the street it gave the place a very nice and unique feel.
One of the things I loved about BA was the food and my favorite being the Tenedor Libre (all you
can eat) at a Chinese restaurant for 2.50. Not only Chinese food but also a Parrilla (huge meat grill) which is where they cook the various meat, beef, pork, chicken. I would just stuff my self with filet steak until on the verge of being sick it was great! Michelle was happy with all you can eat cake and ice cream and she stuffed herself with that. After a week of doing this even my clothes started stinking of meat with my sweat being pure meat juice!
The hostel we were at was great for meeting people and we had some great nights out with a few bar crawls and then heading to a club. One of the clubs we went to was huge and we all had a good night dancing away with the rest of BA until 5 in the morning! The lads we were with were happy enough as BA´s finest was on show and leaving not much to the imagination! I can tell you one thing we are definitely getting old as it was so hard trying to drag ourselves out of bed the next day and then trying to muster up the energy for the
Shells leg
The dirty dog has not shaved them for about 7 weeks, it was like sleeping with a man! next night when all we wanted to do was have a nice early night but no, you end up getting dragged out again, too old for this! Whilst at the hostel they celebrated their one year anniversary and it was a great night with loads of food and a Mariachi band to top it off. It reminded us of the good times in Mexico 15 months ago!
