So we finally take off South Bound about 8 o'clock. Our flight attendant refuses to serve us unless we speak in Spanish, which was pretty entertaining since all we could say was "Mas Vino!" At about 3am we flew through a lightening storm, which, albiet scary, was pretty neat. I debated for awhile whether or not I should wake up Abby for this once in a life time experience, and eventually decided she needed to see this. After waking up Abby just looked straight ahead, said "Oh shit", then immediately fell asleep without even looking out the window. In her defense she woke up about 2 minutes later and watched it...but her survivor skills were a bit delayed.
We landed in Argentina around 645am. What I was expecting was how flat it would be. Plus it had a really neat layer of fog covering the entire city. We somehow managed to get all of our belongings and into a cab to take us directly to the ferry. Our cab driver spoke 0 english so it was amazing we ended up at the right spot. We missed the ferry we wanted that took us directly to Montevideo, and instead took a
ferry/bus combination to Colonia then to Montevideo. This ended up being a treat since it took about the same time but we got 2 cities in Uruguay instead of two.
Abby and I got split up on the bus, and I ended up sitting next to a Monk. This was probably for the best, because anyone less holy would have probably smacked me for leaning across them to take as many pictures as I did. After about 20 minutes of this the guy finally started to talk to me, and turns out he had lived in NYC in his premonk years. (And like actual NYC...not like the fake NYC people in Thailand kept claiming to be from.) We then proceeded to have a 2 hour discussion on the various types of Buddhist monks and I may or may not have converted...I don't know, it got weird for a little bit.
We eventually made it to Montevideo, and its a good thing that Abby and I know what little spanish we know because NO one here speaks English. We somehow figure out what bus to get on and end up at our hostel which is right in the middle
of Old Town. We muster up enough energy to walk around the board walk which was absolutely gorgeous. Although, there seem to be a lot of dogs and people driving horse wagons around...and i'm not talking about romantic horse and carriages I'm talking about functional horse wagons that probably number cars 1:20...which is strange in such a large city. Needless to say Abby has been put on permanent poop watch to make sure I don't step in the middle of it...this was after one too many close calls. Abby and I took a romantic walk along the beach where we got to see our very first (very dead) Uruguayian (?) rat. We found a cute bar right near the water to grab a drink. Turns out they only really have 1 type of beer in Montevideo, and that one beer only comes in one size, which is large. I'm talking about 1 liter large, which is awesome.
