Saturday
Andrew and Rosanna took us to a large kids park, el Jaguel. Heaps of swings, slides, etc. free too, so it’s popular with the locals. It has BBQ and picnic areas, all the stuff you’d expect at a park. There’s a small fee for the trampolines (Ur$20) and for the go-karts. (Ur$25) We also went on horses for half an hour. (Ur$100) Zane, who’s 3, even got his own horse. Great for the kids, they all loved it and now, of course, want a horse.
Juan and Teresa took us to the meeting that night and while we don’t really get what’s talked about, we understand a few words here and there to almost make sense of it…almost. We can find the scriptures ok, but they’ve normally finished with it when we finally find it. Marianne prepared to read a scripture in the WT in Spanish for a few days, and so the conductor was pre-warned. She did good, a bit flustered towards the end, but a good effort. Then the pressure was on, I put my hand up for an answer, but was missed out. Phew. But the guys next to me geed me up, and when I put
my hand up again, a few boys pointed me out. It went ok, they got the point at least. I really felt like a little kid again struggling with the language. Went to Fernando’s for dinner again. New best friends. His mum and daughter came too, with her fiancé. Pizzas and beer, seems to be traditional grub anywhere. At least we got an early night for witnessing tomorrow. (midnight)
Marianne went witnessing with Sylvana and Callum and I went with Juan. Similar responses, until Sylvana finished up having started a study. Marianne’s going with her to it tomorrow. No mucking around here. Then went to Fernando’s mums for lunch. Wonderful hospitality, and after eating enough for a month, we met up with Andrew and Rosanna to go to Piriapolis, a small tourist town on the beach. That’s another great thing about getting to know the locals. Not just making new friends, but they know all the best spots to see. Beautiful views over the town and Rio del Plata. The mouth of the river between Uruguay and Argentina doesn’t officially finish until Punte del Este on the Uruguay side. Not quite sure on the Arg side, have to check that
one out. After the kids and Andrew went for a quick dip in the freezing water, we went to the small local zoo. Not really much there, but good for the kids and us to see the local wildlife. Like seeing a small zoo in Aust, I guess, and seeing ‘roos and emus. During the day, I caught ‘pink eye.’ Allergy city here apparently, windy dust and pollen blowing everywhere. Look it up, it’s truly gross. I’ve got photos of my eye, but I don’t think anyone would be keen to see. I woke in the middle of the night and couldn’t open my eye, it was so puffed up and pretty foul.
While Marianne was at the study, Callum and I went to the beach. I forced myself in the water to clean my eye out. Normally, you get used to the water if it’s cold. Not at this time of the year. Everything felt cold to the bone. So we stayed out and built a castle, as you do.
We borrowed Fernando’s bike on Tuesday, but Callum and I couldn’t do much, rained most of the day. Fernando picked us up, and we went to Sylvana’s parents for
dinner. A cute, humble home. She cooked empanadas and a traditional dish, like a cake with layers of pastry, ham, cheese, egg and tomato. We really loved it there and had a fantastic time, many laughs. Meeting the brother’s has truly been the highlight.
As if they’re not sick of yet, we had lunch again at Fernando and Sylvana’s. Milanese, which is schnitzel. They want to organize our next trip for when we come back. A few days in Brazil, in Florianopolis. And maybe to Machu Pichu. That’s where I’d love to go, but not enough time or money this time. So I guess we’ll have to come back. Then we spent our last night here with Andy, Rosanna and the kids. Now that we’ve been here for two weeks and seen and done pretty much everything, it’s a good time to go home. Don’t get me wrong, we’d love to stay, but only if we were doing something constructive, seeing new sights or meeting new people.
Our last day here and we were seen off by Andy, Rosanna, Fernando and Sylvana. Looking forward to seeing them again.
