Chris at School
Setting up the computers with Eduardo. Project Patagonia continues to improve the educational environment for students in rural Argentina. On March 9th we completed the second stage of our first multimedia library as well as gathered information on several other schools in the region we would like to help in the future.
In December we made our first trip to Río Negro and completed the first stage of the project to build a multimedia library at Aguada de Guerra school. We brought down books, school supplies, a dvd player, as well as food donations to support the school’s nutrition program. At the same time we also brought down food donations and books for another school in the district (Niñas de Ayouma), which because of its particularly remote location, we have not been able to visit. Although we had been in contact with school administrators before the December trip, it allowed us to see the school in person, see the building, meet the teachers, and gather more information before making the largest part of the investment: computers. Because our December trip gave us confidence that Aguada de Guerra had the proper facilities and staff to utilize computers and incorporate them into their curriculum, we decided to continue
Mini Gauchos
Students do a traditional dance when we arrive. Very cute. with the second stage of the multimedia library and deliver computers on our next visit.
On March 8th and 9th we delivered and set up 5 brand new desktop computers as well as educational software and the 2007 Encarta encyclopedia program. Seeing the faces of the students, teachers, and parents when the computers were delivered was truly all the reward necessary. Upon arrival we were greeted to a formal ceremony with regional education administrators, teachers, parents, and even a traditional dance performed by the students. We helped set up the computers and install the software in the school’s new computer lab.
Using both visits we’ve also set up a pen-pal program between Aguada de Guerra and a school in Canton, OH (where Emily Pierce’s mother teaches). We’ve also provided globes, world maps, and made presentations about Rotary and its mission of world peace at the school.
The project has been successful and we are looking to continue it in the future, by both maintaining our relationship with Aguada de Guerra as well as expanding to reach other nearby schools. In the Fall we are hoping to connect Aguada de Guerra to the internet as well as bring down printers for their new computer lab. To that end, we met with the district administrator during our recent visit to gather information on the other schools in the region to possibly work with in the future. Check out photos here:
