... a lot less ominous than expected, given the history of Cyprus. Apparently, tensions have eased tremendously in the last decade, meaning that crossing the border is as simple as filling out five or six lines on a visa form and flashing your passport. Security-wise, it's actually easier to cross the border than to get into most museums in major European cities.
