My dream of travelling by road from Dushanbe in Tajikistan to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan looked increasingly unlikely. Protestors in Jalal-abad in Kyrgyzstan had blocked the highway linking Osh to Bishkek, and the government threatened to declare a state of emergency in the area so my passage was problematic.
