When I visited a Kampala bookshop recently I was almost bowled over by the number of books on aid, nearly all were negative – ‘Dead Aid’, ‘The Trouble with Aid’. I arrived in Uganda in January 2011 with my girlfriend Lauren through Inter Cultural Youth Exchange UK (ICYE) to work for UYWEFA, a small community-based organisation in Kazo, Wakiso District (a small village / suburb outside Kampala) and lived with a Ugandan family full-time for 6 months. I then moved to Jinja for a year working as Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator for a youth-led development agency with staff and volunteers from all over Uganda and a few internationals.
