The Gallery

This long chamber survived the 1881 fire. It has a barrel-vaulted ceiling encrusted with panels depicting episodes from the Old Testament Book of Genesis. The room would have been used by the family for displaying portraits, for exercise, and as a large reception room. It now contains books dating from around 1500 previously in the house's library - the earliest large collection of books in the care of the National Trust.
