With an inscription from Maya Angelou. Reads "We were stolen sold and bought together from the African continent got on the slave ships together lay back to belly in the holds of the slave ships in each others excrement and urine together sometimes died together and our lifeless bodies thrown overboard together today we are standing up together with faith and even some joy" Despite founding Savannah without a slave trade, Oglethorpe eventually succumbed to the demands of plantation owners and allowed it. Without such trade the plantation owners would not have been able to make their vast fortunes, and it was partly because they considered this an unfair trade advantage that the Unionist North, eventually came to blows with the Confederate South in the Civil War
