August 12th 2008 Ternopil is a fairly small city (350,000 inhabitants) but during WW2 it was right on the front between the Germans and Russians. Consequently it was almost totally destroyed with only a few of the original buildings remaining - quite a contrast to Lviv. It's main feature is a large lake created when the river was dammed - it's used for water sports etc and even has a beach !
