27 people died during its construction. A week after opening, 12 more were killed during a stampede when a rumour circulated that the bridge was going to collapse.

As we closed the door to the ambulance station, our shift came to a somewhat anticlimactic end. No big send off, no tearful farewells, in fact, no bugger all. But that was how we’d wanted it, choosing not to have a leaving party because, lets face it, we weren’t really leaving.
