After crossing the border into Kenya, we arranged to catch the first lorry heading south towards Nairobi. We paid before actually seeing the vehicle. That was our first mistake. Just when it felt like everyone was getting married and buying a house, we quit our jobs, bought one-way tickets to Africa, and squeezed our lives into the smallest packs known to any Army surplus store.
