We got lost looking for the track up Pidurutalagala Mountain and ended up in Brian's backyard. He was so happy to see us, promptly invited Ivar and I into his home for a delicious lunch of curry and stout. He was very afraid for us (reckoned the soldiers would shoot first, and forget to ask any questions later). A lonely guy who was very fond of arrack (local moonshine) - I felt sad to leave him.

I have been in Sri Lanka for 3.5 weeks. Being the off-peak rainy season and given the recent attacks by the Tamil Tigers, in hindsight 2 weeks would have been long enough. This country is eerily quiet, and sometimes I would be lucky to meet another soul in the various guesthouses I stayed in. Who knew it was such a small island?
