Departures and Arrivals

This is an installation of 900 christening bonnets honoring the babies who died in Female Factories throughout Van Diemen's Land. There were an estimated 1200 babies born at the Female Factory at Cascades, South Hobart. 75% did not survive. The bonnets were sewn by women throughout Tasmania and the mainland to an authentic colonial christening bonnet pattern. The artist is Christina Henri.
