We were met on the Laos side of the Vietnam/Laos border by a forlorn French man who had hiked a large part of the way to the border and missed the one bus a day away from there by 30 minutes. Now, 23 hours later, we were the first travellers he'd seen and he seemed eager to display his local knowledge.
