BIG TREE BEHIND THE WILLOW IS A HICKORY

There aren't many hickory trees at the Hermitage anymore. Sam Houston stopped by one day and cut one down for use as a walking stick. He flew into a rage at some Congressman and beat him near plumb to death with it. Francis Scott Key got him an acquittal on the charges, and the notoriety he got from the trial restored him from obscurity.

He was a war hero too by virtue of defeating the Creeks at Horseshoe Bend and stealing their land and then by defeating the pesky Redcoats at the Battle of New Orleans.
