Culebra Cut
The Culebra Cut is where the French failed. The were trying to build a sea-level canal which meant they'd have to dig down at lease 85' across the country. Turns out, this part of the country is basalt, incredibly hard. Many men died working on this portion of the Canal, often from TNT that blew up 'early'.
