Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic island, 7°56′ south of the Equator in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) from the coast of Africa and 1,400 miles (2,300 kilometres) from the coast of Brazil. It is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of of which the main island, Saint Helena , is around 800 miles (1,300 kilometresm) to the southeast. In addition to St Helena, the territory also includes Ascension Island and the sparsely populated Tristan da Cunha archipelago, 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometres) to the south, about halfway to the Antarctic Circle. Named after the day of its recorded discovery, the date of the Ascension of Jesus, Ascension Island was an important safe haven and coaling station to both mariners and commercial airliners back in the days of international ... read more

St Helena Island is a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is 1,200 miles (1,950 kilometres) from the South-West coast of Africa and 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometres) from the coast of South America. It has a sub-tropical climate and is one of the remotest settled islands in the world. This island was described in some blurb we had read as 'unexceptional volcanic rocks in the ocean ' However, we had also been told by others who had been here that it was a very interesting stop and we were both looking forward to it. We had booked the ship's tour as we thought that this was the most appropriate way to see the island. In the event all things were true. We didn't get off to a very auspicious start as the ... read more

Friday 1st February 2008 - Disappears! On the east west leg of this back to back circumnavigation of the globe we crossed the IDL from east to west - thereby gaining a day. We had the same day twice. This time, crossing from west to east the 1st February did not exist! We went from 31 Jan to 2nd Feb. Still as all these days are sea days and pretty much the same it didn't really matter. For more information on the IDL see previous post when we crossed in an east to west direction.... read more

Our second pirate deck party since October. The other passengers are not quite as "up for it" as on the east to west leg. One of the passengers passed away today so that put a bit of a damper on things anyway. Some people got involved and dressed up. See pics of us and Brian who shares our table with his wife Janet who did not come because she was too upset about the passenger who died in front of her eyes during auditions for the passenger panto.... read more

We are currently on route to Aruba and an announcement has just come over the public address system that Travelscope Holidays went into Administration yesterday. Currently we have no more information as to what will happen for the rest of this cruise and understand that the ship's owners are in discussion with ABTA regarding the completion of this trip and the next world cruise. You may see us sooner than expected!! This may also explain why we stayed so long in the Panama Canal yesterday.... read more

At approximately 3.45 pm this afternoon we crossed the equator for the second time this trip. It is traditional to celebrate this with a Line Crossing Ceremony (we did not do this the first time we crossed as it was the middle of the night). The ceremony of crossing the line is an initiation rite in the Royal Navy, US Navy, and other navies which commemorate a sailor's first crossing of the equator. Originally the tradition was created as a test for seasoned sailors to ensure their new shipmates were capable of handling long rough times at sea. Sailors who have already crossed the equator are nicknamed (trusty) SHELLBACKS, often referred to as Sons of Neptune, those who have not are nicknamed (slimy) POLLYWOGS. "King Neptune and his Court" (usually including his first assistant Davy Jones ... read more

Tonight the theme was French. We got into the spirit of things again and dressed up with M going as a French Maid and D going as a Foreign Legion soldier. Our friends Donald and Jackie and Mandy and Keith took part too. All the food on the menu was French, the show was called Pigalle following on with the French theme. Tonight we had a formal dinner where everyone was dressed in Black and White. This was followed by a show called Colour Concerto which was excellent. After the show there was a gala buffet where the chefs showed off their various skills. In the photos, the fish is made out of melon - not sure what the swans were made of but everything was edible. We couldn't eat another thing as we had only just finished our evening meal but we enjoyed looking.... read more
