The way our bus approached the piers back on Sunday, and how the boarding process occurred, there was no good way to step back and take a picture of the whole ship – especially in the rain. David has cheated and has included a picture from the internet of the Queen Mary 2, just to show what our “ferry” looks like as we shuttle across to London.
This morning we slept in for a while before going to the dining room for breakfast. We shared a table with some UK people who were on the return leg of their 14-day roundtrip. In their case, the journey is truly the vacation as opposed to being a mean of how to get to a destination. The other couple will be flying out from Southampton on a small plane to a little island in the channel. They were all surprised at the follow-on plans we have after reaching England. Oh yes, the breakfast was good.
We returned to the cabin and Janet worked on her Christmas Cards (one of the craft projects she has brought on the trip). David went for a walk on the Promenade on deck-7. It was not nearly
Milne Bank
Typical Scenery from our Balcony as windy today but only about 60 degrees so he needed a jacket, but he was able to walk 1.5 miles. Today we passed near the Milne Bank which is a shallow depth barely over 100 meters where the surrounding area is in excess of 3100 meter deep. It is a good fishing area and David saw a fishing drawling and a couple of dolphins while on his walk.
We haven’t mentioned it before but the QM2 is much more stable than our previous cruise ships. They refer to this as an Ocean Liner with a much deeper keel than typical Cruise Liners with more rounded keels. So even though it has been pretty windy the previous days, our ride has been remarkably smooth. However we are glad not to be challenging the effects of Hurricane Florence down on the US east coast.
We had a plan to go to the Golden Lion pub at 11:15 for the 11:30 trivia game, and then we would stay for a pub lunch. Except it was completely full (standing room only) so we wandered through the shops before returning to our cabin. We needled/read until 1:30 and then went back to try the pub again. That’s not quite so long since again the clocks moved forward at Noon. Happily this time there was a table available – only one but we grabbed it. But the Fish & Chips were delicious. Janet also got a cappuccino coffee and David got a pint of English ale.
After lunch Janet went back to the cabin to do more work on her projects while David went to the Royal Court Theater to watch one of the Insights Lecture about the “War Comes to the North Atlantic”. It was an interesting but quick review of the transport of men and supplies across the ocean to bolster Britain during WW2. It focused more on the transfer of aircraft and the consequential effect it then had on the sea lanes for shipping. Anyway, it was interesting.
David got back a little before 3:00. Janet went to spend an hour with the Knitting Gathering in the Carinthia Lounge. This is a nice quiet area but with suitable lighting and comfortable seating. Today there were about 10 needle workers. On the way back to the cabin, Janet stopped in the buffet and got a bowl of cookies for us to nibble on in the cabin.
While she was away, David was able to find the start of the “Solo – Star Wars” movie on the TV. It is running continuously on one of the channels, so the trick was catching it at the beginning – lucky David. Janet got back somewhere in the middle of the movie and was able to check her e-mail and do more on her project the rest of the afternoon.
Dinner tonight was another Formal Night. We had some more wine in the cabin before going to eat again. Tonight we had all 6 at the table again. Janet had a Caesar Salad and the Beef Tenderloin dinner, with Chocolate cake for dessert. David had a beef pate for appetizer and the Sea Bass for his dinner, with a caramel apple cheesecake for dessert.
This evening we were to the Illuminations Room to watch a movie at 8:00 called “The Darkest Hour”. It was about Churchill at the turbulent beginning of his rule as Prime Minister. We found it very interesting and enjoyed it. Then we stayed up late (for us) and went to the Royal Court Theater to see a singer named Laura Magann. David had seen a brief performance on the first night and told Janet about it. We both really enjoyed tonight’s show. She sang some wonderful songs from some of our favorite musicals.
By the time we got back to the cabin we were pretty tired so the blog just had to wait until Thursday. Good night.
