15,000 Feet Deep
Good Morning Everyone, we are 800 miles east of Ft. Lauderdale in 15,000 feet of the Atlantic Ocean. We haven’t seen much of the sun since leaving the states but it has been warm in the 70’s. Since it will take us 7 days to cross to Madeira (Funchal), Portugal, an island off of Africa, our days are pretty peaceful. We have spent time making new friendships.
Unlike our last long cruise we have not had any misadventures… yea!!! The worst that has happened is that on our first stop, Phoenix, Cope got a call that one of his credit cards had been compromised ;-) Ah my, so we are already down a credit card… but we are prepared so no big problem.
After a night in Ft. Lauderdale, we grabbed a cab and had the driver stop at the local Walgreens for some diet coke, snacks and disinfectant ;-).
The Celebrity Constellation’s guests are from all over the world, Italy, France, India, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Mexico, China, England and Canada to just name a few.
Yesterday for lunch we were seated with a
mother and her 10 year old daughter heading to Rome. They are originally from Sri Lanka and now call Austin, Texas home. Mom is writing a musical. Dad will meet them in Milan. They lost track of the the grandparents the first evening on the ship and haven’t seen them since…they are having too much fun ;-)
Table mates of ours in the evening include a couple from Canada who were both widowed and found each other over an internet dating site 5 years ago. An Italian couple who live on Long Island. He came to the United States when he was 15; they still have a second home in Sicily. Two sisters who hail from South Africa. The younger sister is deaf from measles as a child.
Over coffee this morning we met a woman who has a business making organic scarves and garments that are just beautiful. After two days we already have people stopping us to check up on what we are doing.
We’ve taken advantage of the fabulous Thalassotherapy Pool (a gigantic salt water hot tub about 20’ X30’) with vertical hot jets of water. Been to the library a few times, the
computer lab, and of course the photo gallery; they are taking pictures of us all the time ;-) They have some great topics for lectures but unfortunately one speaker just reads his slides …ugh… don’t they vet these people? The other speakers are good however and we’ve learned a lot about why flying is so safe, the trial of Socrates and King Henry VIII.
Last night was the first big production in the Celebrity Theatre and it was all show tunes which everyone loves. This afternoon we found that even though we have lived awhile, when presented with snippets of music and trivia questions from the 1950’s, we can’t for the life of us come up with the actual song titles and artists, nor do we know things like what fruit has “flesh eating enzymes”? Do you know? Send us your answer and we will bring you back a prize ;-)
Looking forward to a few more days at sea.
See you on our …Next Blog: around April 10
