We are very tired after yesterday’s travel so we sleep in and decide to spend the day relaxing. We swim in the shallows from the beach in front of the hotel. There’s lots of sharp coral underfoot and we spy the occasional fish. We dry off and set up shop on sun lounges under another small wooden umbrella shaped structure on the beach. Just as I’m about to shut my eyes I spot a large bunch of coconuts in the tree directly above my head. I think that they mightn’t be too pleased that they just missed killing Issy yesterday, and they’ve now decided to take their revenge out on me. I tell Issy that we need to move the sun lounges so that our heads are completely under the structure. She moves hers, which is ... read more

An announcement comes over the PA telling us that we’re about to land. Issy says that we can’t land now because she’s just got comfortable. I tell her that I’m sure the pilot and the rest of the passengers wouldn’t mind if we did laps of Samoa for a couple of hours while she got some sleep. The airport is on the main island of Upolu, but our first stop is the larger but much less populated island of Savai’i which is an hour’s ferry ride away. It‘s 5am when we land and the ferry doesn’t leave until midday, so it seems that we have a few hours to kill. Issy spies that there’s a Sheraton resort near the ferry terminal so we decide to head there to try to get some breakfast and find somewhere ... read more

We were happy to get up at 3am to leave cold Melbourne for our six night trip to Samoa flying via Auckland. We landed in Samoa around 8.30pm pleased to find it was a balmy 28 degrees. Picking our hire car up from the airport it was a challenge finding our way in the dark to our accommodation which was on the other side of the island. We used the first cross-island road; thank goodness our maps on our phones worked without Internet. We were told you had to keep a low speed when driving through villages because of the animals, during our time in Samoa we found this was to be true, dogs, chickens, pigs, horses, cows all wandered across the road. We soon realized why oncoming vehicles were often driving in the middle of ... read more

Blog 33 Pago Pago, Tutuila, American Samoa, April 22 ,2018 – Weather forecast: partly cloudy skies; humidity 85%, temperature 29°C, wind 6kts (2 Beaufort) Early this morning we arrived in American Samoa and the ship was immediately subjected to an inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard. This resulted in the crew going through a complete series of emergency drills. While they conducted their drills most of the guests went ashore to explore Pago Pago, which is the capital of American Samoa. On the opposite side of the harbour was one this island state’s principle industries, a tuna cannery. Fish exports represent 95% of the area’s exports. We boarded a vehicle known as an Aiga (family) bus for our destination, a Samoan village. We drove along the coast to our first photo stop at the Flower Pot ... read more

The last two days have been opposites yesterday pretty much rained all day, so we went to the art galleries that we could find, this amounted to two, The first had some interesting pieces but was more a tourist shop with some pieces particularly prints which were somewhat overpriced for what they were. Maybe because it was very close to a fairly large expensive resort. The second place we went to which was the EPKS museum which is attached to a fine arts school. It was really a gallery rather than an museum and it was refreshing to see quite creative and original artworks. Like much of Samoan culture religion controls all aspects of life and this includes the art school and museum, so artworks must fit within a christian framework, which limits the works of ... read more

There were quiet heavy tropic showers when we got up to day so decided not to attempt the bush walk to Robert Louis Stevenson's tomb today. Just to prove I am doing some work here we went to the Museum of Samoa which has some fragments of Lapita pottery from 3000 years ago and some 'plain pottery' dated 1000 years later. Lapita pottery was a definite decorated ceramic body were as the 'plain' pottery appeared not to have completed the change from clay to ceramic. It is also interesting to note that there were a number of large wooden vessels of a similar time but only a few fragments of ceramics, one could postulate that ceramics was never made here, It may have be brought with the original inhabitants and attempted again unsuccessfully 1000 years later, without ... read more

The last couple of days we have had as relaxing days partly because it is Sunday and a public holiday, partly because we needed a couple of down days. On Sunday we walked from the hotel to Palolo Deep to see how far it was and wandered back to the hotel to sit by the pool and swim, read a book and enjoy the local beer (which I might add is very good from someone who doesn't like beer much). Today Monday we walked to Palolo Deep again and went for a snorkel for an hour or so. The fish were numerous, almost as many as the Churches here, but quiet a lot more timid than the same species that we have seen else where. Then we wandered back to the hotel around lunch time to ... read more

Have had a wonderful last two days - have ended up so tired haven't hat the energy to post anything. After we had been to the cultural centre we met a man touting for business to take us around the Island, while we are often sceptical of people touting for business, our decision to take him up turned out to be a very good one. To put a plug in for him his name is Tusi Junior Tautua, he took us to the highlights on Upolo the first day, we had as long as we wanted at all the places we stopped. First stop was the Robert Louis Stephenson Museum - This was his house kept in it original form with reproductions of anything that was no longer there, i.e. furniture etc. (So much for being ... read more

Had an unexpected day yesterday. We went for a wander around Apia to see what was there and sort out a couple of things for our stay and stumbled on the most amazing cultural introduction though the tourist information centre. We were told there was a free cultural show about to start so we wandered to where we were told and experience a couple of hours of showing umu making, wood caving, traditional tattooing and tapa making, followed by lunch from the umu and singing and dancing - there was commentary along the way explaining the cultural significance of village life. This was an amazing find runs on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We had read a bit about what to do before we came here but this hadn't come up so was a lucky find highly ... read more
