Papua New Guinea 05/11/05-10/11/05
5th Nov 2005
I took Qantas from Melb to Brisbane and transit in there to Port Moresby of Papua New Guinea by Air Niugini. Before booking tickets, I have realized that port moresby is one unique place not easy to travel, expensive, dangerous, hot and so many negative factors you can imagin. However, the fact is so cruel.Firstly,in Bris Airport, I got three strict safe guard checking, to my sunscreen, then my packet
last is to detect my pacy by special equipment for bomb stuff, same was in Sydney last time. i really understand their job, but i always got that, i suspend their motivation. The nightmare just begins. When i claimed my pack in port moresby, cannot find it. in other word,i lost it, no, that is airline respoonsibility. i look like one naked pig in the worst city airport on earth. then to record in lost luggage center, they checked brisbane airport and melbourne. what i can do is just waitting the response. when i checked my travel insurance, i found the date of covering from 6th nov, not 5th,nov. I met a real "bad friday". Port Moresby is a tropical city and real poor one. the people look like Fijian, but
they are more friendly. almost every building outside has metal fense and safe guards.you can feel the safe is a big problem in there. plants are rich, evengreen. currency is similar materials with australian one. kina=dollar, toya=cents. PNG people really like betelnut, which give rise to red ground everywhere by spit.PNG weather is
extremely hot, there are two seasons, wet&dry. PNG government just allows
the Air Niugini to land in PNG land, so the price of traveling to PNG is high. With music noise,i can never sleep at night. that's PNG tranditional activity at weekend, especially at saturday.

today good luck is coming back,i got my pack again due to wrong of carrier in brisbane.until now although i have not travel in brisbane but much trouble from
there blocks me any interest to there. Port moresby downtown is small and
"nothing" to see, just building of bank south pacific is nice. another place is paga hill lookout. from there, you can view whole port moresby and port, wharf, or lagoon. in mountian, so many luxary building, of course heavy safe guard checking.when i came back, other travelers noticed me paga hill is dangerous due to some warnings from lonely planet. fortunately, i am alive be back. house of PNG close the beach builds up above ground because of hot weather, some are one the surface of sea, and using some stakes support them.

botanic garden is a real rain forest view, give original PNG landscape, include some unique plants and animals, of course paradise bird involved. in parliament house, photos inside prohibited and there are three gifts from china,uk and australia. a big urn from china. PNG independent activity was in 1975 from british.PNG has extraordinary relation with australia, philippine, indonisia and india. that's all about prot moresby, but just tiny parts of about PNG. treking in Owen Stanley Range is a necessary activity for backpackers ,but no enough money and time stop me.lonely men with careful can travel PNG safely but for lonely ladies, no way. that's too crazy.

Loloata Island is one of "empty" islands in PNG.before more than 20 years ago, an Aussie bought it from PNG government, and grow plants, feed animals and built resorts for travellers.however, now you still can feel non-vivid in there.much more percent of area are yellow wild weeds and beach is full of grave and shells. pollution is a problem, mainly rubbish. the Aussie boss emploies about 20 local people, and labor's salary is kina 3/hour (about australian dollar 1.5 ).if want to absorb much more travellers, not only island surrounding improvement but
PNG government changes some unreasonable strategy, such as allowing
other airline to land in PNG.Novermber is line between dry and wet season, it's obvious more and more cloud above Owen Stanley Range. missing hiking in there should be the largest pity in PNG.

I thought nothing happens today, but after breakfast i decided to follow
the Austrian couple to Varirata National Park for whole day. i am so lucky that i saw a real PNG in last day of PNG trip. Varirata National park is one tiny part of Owen Stanley Range, about 45km from port moresby downtown and 3 kina/45mins by PMV(public motor vehicle). we hiked in there about 4 to 5 hours. that is really amazy place, what we met most exciting is about 3 hour non-stop down-pour rain. that should be the first "long" rain in around port moresby in this wet season, and we just kept walking in this 3 hours. in the rain forest, you are covered by heavy fog, and huge trees shadows stop sunshine on you, little water on the grounds with some leechs. i tried my best to protect my camera
by pack-cover, just took very limited photos. we saw the tree house also.
it has been in there about 75 years. unfortunately, my camera doesnot
work after hiking.
tomorrow early morning, say good bye to PNG.
