Reunion!
Catching up on gossip at mission Bay. So I left Australia & landed in New Zealand. So far I've been mostly lazing around in Auckland!
I got to my hostel & met up with Jamie that first Saturday afternoon. We had a nice time catching up over tea & cake, then cider/beer & finally supper. Together with some wandering around the centre. Sunday morning I first got moved from one share room to another (amusing as I actually had a dorm bed booked!) then had a chat with my parents (having had a lovely long chat with Mark the night before) & finally met up with Jamie in town. Since it was a nice day we walked along the coast to Mission Bay where we had lunch followed by an ice-cream on the beach 😊
Back home for another chat with Mark before bed. As Jamie coudn't get the week off work on Monday I finally got moved to my dorm room & then headed off to see the Domain & Auckland Museum stopping briefly at Holy Trinity Cathedral on the way (lovely if modern stained glass windows). Auckland museum was nice too - lower floor is devoted to Maori & Polynesian native artifacts, the first floor
is natural history & the top is a war museum. I ended up staying until they kicked everyone out then wandered home to meet Jamie back at the hostel. There was tasty risotto & much photo admiring.
Tuesday it was nice & sunny so I headed off to try the Coast to Coast walkway. I planned to loop around the Domain & join the walkway there, I failed to find the signs in the Domain but had an enjoyable stroll through it's pathways before finding the Coast to Coast route at the exit. I then followed the route up Mt Eden, through Campbell park & up One Tree Hill with only a couple of instances where missing signs made progress difficult (& I only went wrong once t the end from this) & having to detour around the building site on Mt Eden! It was a faily nice walk as city walks go. Mt Eden has an amazingly conical crater! It's also interesting from these volanic hills to see the lay out of the city - all the volcano peaks are very obvious once you climb above the roof line. I hopt they don't blow again soon. There was
Hotunui
Artwork inside the meeting hut a simulation of this in the museum which was interesting.
Wednesday it rained so I spent most of the time sorting stuff online with a brief excursion to Parnell Village shops (where I failed to find any possum wool - they were out of stock) & the supermarket for supper. Thursday it was lovely & sunny! After a bit of stuff online I took sarnies out to the Parnell Rose Garden & sat there with my book & guidebook for a few hours (glad I picked up sunscreen at the supermarket!) before wandering back to try to book my tour ticket sections. This prooved much trickier than expected so I will try to pop in after my trip to Tiritiri Matangi tomorrow (an island bird reserve)... Jamie turned up as I was enjoying the remaining patch of sun out the front with a couple of lads from the hostel & we made yummy stew for supper.
Hoping the weather is nice tomorrow....
