Journey so far...

The west coast highway was spectacular, as was the Arthurs Pass connecting the West with Christchurch.

Date visited: 3-4 February

The journey to Lake Wannaka led us away from the west coast and inland via the Haast Pass. The mountains and lakes on the journey were as ever jaw dropping.. If these were covered in snow this would be even more spectacular. The road winded its way through the mountains - as away from it all as ever and again with hardly any cars en-route.

The clouds from the West were finally leaving us behind.

I realised I couldn't do my SkyDive over Fox Glacier as intended - which was supposedly one of the most stunning there is in the entire country as the Tasman Sea, Alps, Glaciers are all below as you jump. I was warned about the lingering cloud from the Tasman sea and mountains, so had Wannaka in mind as a back up!

I phoned the company and luckily they had space.

More on that later!

Lake Wannaka is like a popular town in the Tyrol - supposedly less touristy than Queenstown. It has a certain charm about it. The main reason to come here though was just to check out the lake - and for me to do something extreme...

The roads often have no houses on them but instead a scattering of signs either directing you to beautiful jaw dropping picnic area overlooking the sea or a valley, a waterfall, or a view point often only a few minutes walk away from the road
